So the game was working perfectly, but then I saw the thread about changing the sound, and so I changed the names of the files it talks about. The sound now is better, but when I try to enter combat, the game crashes? Help? I am going to try to change the sound files back, but I would like to be able to keep them.

Happened to me too- Crashed when entering combat. You probably already did this, but just changing the sound files back to their original names made the game work fine again. - Dan
This used to be a problem when running Darklands on an original DOS computer system. The problem usually manifested itself after the game had been played for quite a while and occurred when entering the tactical screen mode such as entering combat. It was one of the most complained about problems when originally released and became increasingly mitigated with fixes issued in subsequent patches. The reason it happens is from running out of memory. It had become rare 30 years ago if a person booted into DOS with just the bare minimum of drivers necessary loaded into high memory. My suspicion is that this may be an artifact of the environment emulation in DOSBox. It would be good to check how much free memory is present when starting the game in the configuration you are using. There might be configuration settings in DOSBox itself that could help avoid this problem.

Cheers!
