Hey everyone,
Some of us only decided to play Daikatana after learning of the unofficial 1.3 community patch, in the hope of getting a polished game to play through.
Patch 1.3 however also introduces some options and parameters which can lead to an experience that is different in spirit to the original vision (as established in the last official patch 1.2).
Here's what you need to do if you want to play a fixed vanilla Daikatana with patch 1.3 (latest version as of this writing is 2018-12-23):
- before launching the game, in order to get the sidekicks to have the original 100HP health (instead of ridiculously high values), simply rename aidata.bak to aidata.vsc (note the VSC NOT CSV) and this will give them 100HP as is the case in the official version of the game.
- launch the game and in the main menu, go to video options: go with spot shadows not volume shadows, brightness 60 % and texture gamma 3 (to see the game as it was meant to be seen, and if you have the possibility to play in the original 4:3 aspect ratio go with a resolution of 1280x1024)
- make sure you have the "Play Sidekick Chatter" option selected in the sound options, and before starting a new singleplayer game (when choosing the difficulty setting), make sure that "No sidekicks" is NOT selected! (bonus gems - a leftover from the initial Daikatana release that saw a misguided attempt at limiting saves to collected gems within levels - can be safely ignored)
- open the console just before starting a new singleplayer game (when choosing the difficulty setting), by pressing the tilde key and type the following three CVAR commands (press ENTER after typing each):
/sv_sidekick_regen_hp 0
/sv_sidekick_friendly_fire 1
/sv_sidekick_exit_range 150
Now you will have the sidekicks-related gameplay as it was envisioned! (no health regeneration, taking friendly fire into account and the necessity to have them by your side when leaving a level ^^) Now you can start a new game, and these settings will be saved in your first game save!
Cheers
