Am I just unlucky or is there some trick to working with your AI companions? I'm on the level "The Vault" and the AI has broken. I've spent the last hour trying to get them to the ending. Superfly started running circles between rooms. Spent 10 minutes breaking him out of that behavior. Both got stuck near a pit constantly running right at the edge. Firing a rocket dislodged them but then they broke on the ladder. Multiple times I've told them to "come here" and they run the other way. Then Mikkiko got crushed by the elevator. At that point I was about ready to rip my hair out. All of this work was to get them about 100 feet through the level and I've still got a long way to go... If I work up the energy to deal with this crap.

This game would have been so much better without the companions.

rest assured everyone who has played the game has had this issue at some point. its possibly the single greatest flaw in the entire game. there is a way to play without them though, by starting a co-op game and playing it solo.
Problem with coop is no story cutscenes. I did finally manage to 'fix' the problem. I had been reloading saves within the level, and they always got stuck. This time I loaded a save from the previous level and when I got to the problem areas they actually managed to do what they were supposed.

They STILL started to act glitched out, sprinting walking in place towards the pit, but this time when I called them to come they actually did. Game is majorly wonky.

Pro-Tip: Save often and save every level, especially near the end. Turn on unlimited saves so it isn't complete torture.
I just completed a full playthrough of Daikatana v1.2 this month. The bots needed some handholding but it never took more than a couple of seconds to get them out of any given room. I didn't experience any elevator or door kills.

What I used were a lot of 'come' and 'stay' commands. Normally I'd have them following just fine, but eventually I'd turn a corner they'd have some trouble with. At that point I'd tell both bots to 'stay' (both bots need to be commanded individually), and then tell the closest one to 'come' to me. About 50% of the time that would clear things up. It's like it resets the bot or something.

If that didn't work, I'd tell the bot to 'stay' again and then walk up fairly close to it so that there's nothing between me and them. Giving it a 'come' command would then get them off the obstruction and I could proceed to move them forward. Once clear, I tell the now free bot to stay and work on getting the other bot out. This probably sounds like a lot but doesn't take too long in practice, especially if you've mapped most of the bot commands to your mouse (I use a 3rd party utility to bind mouse buttons 4 &5).

During my playthrough, I encountered bots getting stuck on the lip of map prefabs on two occasions (a fountain & a camp fire). It's like they forgot to bake in the map hints for the bot to jump out. While you can push a bot off a ladder it seems impossible to push them up a shallow stair. I had to load a save on both of those. :(

Regarding items and the 'get' command, I found that bots would only pick up them up if they were close to me and the targeted item. I also found it helpful to draw a weapon with a crosshair for purposes of pointing as I'd miss 50% with the 'get' command and the daikatana. It seems a fair number of items they'd normally pick up are placed where the bots can't get them (not always obvious). They seem to only be able to pickup low tier weapons. Getting Superfly and Mikiko to use health stations is essential.
Believe me, I know how to use the bot commands. I'm constantly giving them orders from various angles. I'd try the stop and come command from multiple angles and it wouldn't fix them when they got stuck on the edge of the pit. It literally took a rocket to knock them from their stuck position which took off a huge amount of health... even then they would go right back and get perma-stuck again. I've watched youtube playthroughs of this map and its like they are playing different versions of the same game.

The only fix was reloading the previous map as it seemed to clear up whatever pathfinding or scripting error occured.

Think I'm going to give the game one more chance and restart on a higher difficulty level (Playing on Ronin/easy). If the bots completely break again I'll just watch the story cutscenes on youtube and play the game in coop mode.
Wow... this game is determined to break me. Restarted game on a higher difficulty (Samurai) and this time when I got to the level where the spirit of Hiro's ancestor breaks the fuse box the door didn't open after the cutscene. Of course I saved just as the level started, after the scene broke and the level transition save was saved over when I checked another level.

Time to restart again.

Been fine so far. Superfly got stuck on a ladder for a little while but after giving him the stay and follow commands it seemed to hen be ok.

Pretty surprised in general by Daikatana - I'm enjoying it and finding it had a lot of good ideas and would certainly be interested to see what a remake would be like with the kinks eased out.
Makes me wonder if the game could be moddable. Now that it's more widely available, maybe some modders could fix the worse problem (like they're doing with Arx Fatalis, although I don't know if the Daikatana source code has been made public).
Love to see a mod that removed the companions, like coop mode, but kept the cutscenes from single player. A fan made fix of the Wyndrax tower save bug would be nice too.

GreasyDogMeat:
Use the god cheat. If you work it a certain way you can get it for the companions but not yourself.

As for the Wyndrax Tower, fight him with ballista the first time, then rampage cheat one hit kill him after he opens the bookshelf.

Problem is the game is not worth modding in the first place. Only good games get modded.
Hey, Daikatan is a just a crappy game. Admit it and move on,and don't waste time trying to stand up for it.

Care to explain this then?
