ccrashh: Serious question. I was going to get the pre-release package (it was something like $110 Cdn) - but thought better of it. Now I'm wondering if I should wait for a price drop, given all the issues I've read about.
Are the issues that bad, or is this typical hyperbole - and people who love to pile on things?
I've got 595 hours of gameplay registered on Galaxy so far and while some of that was falling asleep with the game on or other things where I wasn't playing, the game itself says I have played for 444:41, so it keeps track of time a bit differently. I've completed all of the side quests, NCPD cop quests, random cop stuff, racing quests, 2 of the 4 crappy fight quests, and the main quest line up to and not including a quest that takes you "to the point of no return". My menu says I am 90%, 60%, and 40% complete in the 3 categories shown. My character is maxed out at level 50 with max Street Cred of 50 also. In addition to that I have put quests on hold numerous times to explore the city and kill gangsters in alleys, joy ride, parkour climb on top of skyscrapers etc. Along the way I have found hidden things that trigger additional secret questlines also that do not show up as main quests nor on the map at all and completed them.
I have not yet finished the game, but as you can see from the above I've had oodles of time to play it and see all of the good and bad it has to offer other than the end of the story (by progressing through the point of no return).
Having said all of that, the main story is pretty awesome IMHO, there are some strong characters and situations, and a lot of action packed sequences. Also a lot of the side quests are really cool too, and some are pretty damn funny. Sadly, some of the quests in the game are interrupted by game bugs or immersion is broken by bugs or bad programming or bad design choices or whatnot that needs to be polished up in the future (I hope).
My first 5 days of playing I encountered no real bugs, but ever since then it is almost impossible to go for 15 minutes without seeing some bug or glitch or bad AI or something that makes me think "damn, if they only postponed this game another year or two and finished it off completely before releasing it, it could have been an epic 10 out of 10 masterpiece"... but they didn't.
The game is incredibly bug ridden, super bad AI, people walking floating in the air, cars driving through walls of buildings or falling from the sky, people doing the same thing or walking in circles, people in a 3 block radius panic like you shot someone just because you accidentally bumped into someone due to the way they have dodge set up as double tap direction keys which is really easy to accidentally trigger, so half the city goes to a massive panic because you stepped on someone's toe. If you're lucky the cops will magically teleport in 3 feet behind you and shoot you instantly just because you accidentally bumped into someone.
Is the game fun? Parts of it are awesome, but parts of it are terrible due to bad design or being rushed out the door in an incomplete buggy state. Is it worth $80? The Witcher 3 was worth $80 even though they charged far less than that. Cyberpunk in its release state and in its current state is not an $80 game IMHO, and I am a big fan of the company and their games.
IMHO, after they actually fix the plethora of game breaking bugs and other serious bugs, and rewrite the entire NPC and vehicle AI systems, renovate the buggy crappy inventory and crafting systems and a lot of other work, then it might be an $80 game, but honestly it's more of a buggy $40 game in its current state.
Don't get me wrong though, it's not an un-fun game. The story is awesome and some parts of it are very high quality, and there is a lot of entertainment to be found in the game, humour and other things. Night Citty is massive and fun to explore, it's also fun to take photos all over the place. It's really a super mixed bag and everyone I know has mixed feelings about it but is still having fun with it for the most part (on PC).
If you're the type of person who can enjoy a game for what it does good and handle a monumental number of bugs and broken stuff or bad design elements trusting that they will eventually be fixed over time, then it is possible to have fun with it. I mean, I wouldn't have spent over 400 hours if I wasn't enjoying myself, but I'm also quite disappointed at what a buggy and unfinished state it was in and that they charged $80 for it in this state. If I knew in advance it would be like this I would have waited until they fixed the game completely and people were saying it was polished and great before buying and then probably bought it on a seasonal sale.
I'm skeptical that they'll be able to fix everything that really needs to be fixed, but at the same time hopeful that they will, especially with the money they've raked in. My biggest fear is that they lose too many key developers due to the 6+ month long crunch prior to release, and have to hire new talent unfamiliar with the game who have to get up to speed without the original developers being present. That would be a disaster.
Anyhow, if you trust the company enough that they'll fix everything over time and think you can have enough fun regardless of the endless bugs and design issues and don't mind paying $80 to experience it, then go for it. If you'd rather play a completed polished game then I'd recommend wishlisting it and watching each patch that comes out and reading the forums for consensus on the current state of the game over time from people playing it, in particular people who can look at the state of the game objectively for what it is and not just fanboi drool all over it based on what it was supposed to be (but isn't yet).
Also make sure you've got a current gen high end PC too unless you want a total slideshow on low graphics settings with lowered resolution.
