TheDogCatcher: I've just been looking through Proton DB and some people are reporting that the game works with Nvidia cards, however the reports I've seen fail to mention which version of the game they are using so it might be a bit of a long shot but here is a list of launcher setting etc. that might be worth a try:

Proton 7.0-6

GPU : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
Driver Version : NVIDIA 535.54.03

Launcher Settings :

VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 gamemoderun mangohud %command% --launcher-skip -skipStartScreen

Proton 8.0-2

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU
Driver Version : NVIDIA 530.41.03

Launcher Settings :
PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11,dxr VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 %command% --launcher-skip

GE-Proton8-4

GPU : NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
Driver Version : NVIDIA 530.41.03

Launcher Settings :
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11 MANGOHUD=1 OBS_VKCAPTURE=1 gamemoderun %command% --intro-skip --launcher-skip --skipStartScreen

Proton Experimental

GPU : NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER
Driver Version : NVIDIA 535.54.03

Launcher Settings :
PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11,dxr VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 %command% --launcher-skip --intro-skip -skipStartScreen

All of these reports are from the last 3 weeks so there's a chance that something here might work if you have 1.62 or later installed.

If you do manage to stop the freezes please let us know.
Linux users can spare themselves the time of trying the above suggestion. I've spent an unfortunate amount of time trying all of this now on both Lutris and Steam to no avail. The simple fact is that the game since 1.6 is broken for us.

As much as I hate having this issue, I don't understand how this is the game's fault. If it works in Windows just fine, then It's something in the linux/nvidia/wine/vkd3d stack that is not compatible with whatever the newer versions are doing.

Nvidia just released a new bugfix version of the 535 driver line. I will test it as soon as I can be bothered to reinstall 1.63

Hi guys,

I have an idea. try running CP77 and wait until it freezes and after that check "sudo dmesg"
If you get output like this:

[16052.214603] NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 31, pid=68326, name=Cyberpunk2077.exe, Ch 0000005e, intr 00000000. MMU Fault: ENGINE GRAPHICS GPCCLIENT_GCC faulted @ 0xe40_00000000. Fault is of type FAULT_PDE ACCESS_TYPE_VIRT_READ

TheDogCatcher: From what I can gather this problem seems to be specific to Nvidia cards, it would be interesting to know if anyone with a Nvidia card is able to run the game on Linux .

One thing that confuses me is that sometimes the game will run for a couple of minutes before freezing and other times it will freeze almost instantly.

Whatever the issue is I hope it's resolved before Phantom Liberty is released.
Works fine for me.

I'm on Ubuntu 22.04 and using Lutris.
If you go through the install instructions in the lutris github wiki pages and then install it, it works great with version 1.63

You need to download the proton GE 8-10 in the lutris wine version runners menu.
I was using 8-8 when I first tried it; also worked great!

Also for reference I'm on Nvidia 2070 super using driver version 525 proprietary.
I run it in fullscreen with all the dlss, etc turned off... running at normal HD (1920x1080) with settings on medium(original)... though high seems to work just as well with more heat.

There are a couple caveats to get it to not crash:
1) Do NOT run youtube in the background! This seems to cause a driver conflict with various things that causes either the game to crash or the system to blackscreen with a variety of games.

2) Do NOT tab out. When tabbing back in, some sort of audio problem happens that causes the game to freeze after a little while with a white screen.

Good luck!

Since 1,62, so the last "stable" release is 1,61.

Which specific NV driver version?

I run at 1440p but I'm on Mint, based on 22.04, with a 2070 Super and running it through Lutris with GE 8-13 or 8-10 it's equally unstable.
My NV drivers are at 535.86.05 as of the most recent update, which I had been avoiding but tried out of desperation to get this working.
There are a lot of 525 driver revisions though, so I'm curious which specific one you're running on.

I don't know how to see what the diver version is beyond 525.
I've had people say 535 is unstable and it was for me too, so when I did the whole fresh install thing, I used 525.

Audio might also be a problem.
Have you shut down everyting in the background?

I've also had Horizon Zero Dawn play flawlessly on the same setup.
Only difference is that one I can tab out and back in with no crash..... seems to be the different engines.

Try joining the Lutris Discord server and asking for help in there.

You should be able to see the full driver version number in, if it's there, in the nvidia driver utility, or 'driver manager' I think it might be so uniquely called. Just curious :)

I'm playing on v1.61 of Cyberpunk now, and happy for now on that. Fingers crossed that in the next few weeks I can work it out. I'm already dual-booting back to Windows to play Starfield, I really don't want to give Windows another excuse for me to be in it lol

In all things Linux Gaming, patience :)
Playing on Arch Linux through heroic launcher using wine-ge-proton8-3 and the game runs smooth as on version 1.63. As I said I'm Arch Linux, Ryzen 7 7700X, 64G ram, RX580 quick preset-Ultra Texture Quality-high.
If I choose the latest version of wine -ge or proton-ge I can't see the characters in the character select screen the screen is just blank.

Ah ha!
You were right; the fan control program shows the full version.
It is: 525.125.06

Yeah... It can be a pain to get it set up right on linux, but eventually it works great!

Oh btw, if you are using Lutris, be aware that it updates to the bleeding edge for all it's sub-drivers.
I found that my Cyberpunk 2077 instalation was buggin out visually today for no reason I could fathom and it turned out that the d3dvk thing updated to a beta driver and it's not working right.

Might be worth looking through those things to make sure yours isn't using an old version... or a super new beta version.
Those are under the Runner options I think.

How is Starfield?
It looks cool, but knowing Bethesda, I'd never want to play their games without mods... at least on any previous game.

Strange the older vesrsions work for you, but not the new ones.

From what I understand, blank screen upon load is often a resolution issue.
Have you tried manually editing the config file to the resolution you want to play at?

Thanks. If I have the will (not likely, but maybe) to try rolling back my driver to that one, I might see if it gets CP2077 running.

I could play around with that a bit more. I think I dropped d3dvk to 2.8 (from 2.9?) at one point to get it running. Maybe another version would prevent the crash. Quite a few variables to go through, but at least easier than a driver rollback.

How is Starfield?
It looks cool, but knowing Bethesda, I'd never want to play their games without mods... at least on any previous game.
It's a Bethesda game through and through. I'm thoroughly enjoying it (60+ hours in), but without a doubt it will improve with quality of life mods. Worth it to remember that's it's an RPG in a space setting, not a Space Sim with RPG story. I feel like a bunch of people out there were expecting something like No Mans Sky or Elite Dangerous but with the Bethesda story style layered over it, and they didn't get what they expected. They got Fallout but with some elements of space-related play attached.
I think I may have found a solution to this freezing issue, I've just played a couple of short sessions (20 min or so) of 1.63 without any crashes, this is definately an improvement as the game would usually freeze on me during the first couple of minutes of gameplay.

Before I carry on I will just state that I recently upgraded my GPU from a GTX 1660ti to an RTX 3060ti, but I don't think this has any bearing on the issue as I'm still using the same drivers ( version 525.125.06 ).

Recently I was trying to find a way to enable multiplayer in the GoG version of No Man's Sky, when I found out about an emulation utility thingy called Bottles, I used this to install the GoG Galaxy client , then I installed NMS via Galaxy and it worked perfectly multiplayer and all.

So then out of curiosity I decided to install the latest version of Cyberpunk via Galaxy, and yeah it seems to work just fine, I'll post back if I encounter any issues .

so quick recap, use Bottles to install GoG Galaxy and then use Galaxy to install and launch Cyberpunk, I'd be interested to know if this solution works for anyone else.

Here's a link to the bottles website if you would like to give it a try : https://usebottles.com/

E2A :

I've been doing some more testing and CP2077 1.63 appears to be quite stable using this method, I've not had any freezes or crashes at all. There are however a couple of issues that I've uncovered during my tests.

The first issue is really very minor, when I first launch the game it won't respond to my keyboard inputs so I can't get off the opening screen, this is easily fixed by tabbing out and back in again.

The second issue is a bit more of a problem, running the game using Bottles comes with quite a performance cost for me, I can run 1.6 using Heroic game launcher and with all settings on Ultra 1080p, I get an average of about 73fps using the ingame benchmark. Running with the same settings in 1.63 and using Bottles I'm only getting an average of 57fps, also running the game on lower settings does nothing to improve performance.

So, the game is stable and it is playable but performance could be a lot better.
