One of the cool thing about Crypt of the NecroDancer is that there's a lot of room to mod the game! We have a very active modding community on Steam and would love to see what our new GoG users come up with!

If you have access to any already created mods, you just need to place them in your downloaded_mods folder in order to use them.

What is proposed in regard to mods DRM-locked away on the Steam Workshop?

We welcome our mod creators to host their mods places other than Steam if they want to.

Yeah, I (and I should think a very good chunk of the GOG user base with me - what with an opposition to DRM being one of the platform's founding principles and all) would really rather the developers just not endorse DRM mechanisms like the Steam Workshop.

I agree. There should be a way to use mods without needing a client.

Definitely not endorsing (or not endorsing) another platform, just saying that's where a lot of mods are currently and letting people know how to continue to use them with the GoG version. We're hoping that GoG users will start making their own mods and we encourage mod creators to host them wherever they'd like.

In enabling something, are you not endorsing that something? Are you confused by the difference between a "platform" and a DRM mechanism like the Steam Workshop? Before DRM mechanisms like the Steam Workshop start finding their way in, "where... mods are currently" is, always, absolutely anywhere - that's how information freedom works. How have people been using Steam Workshop locked content without going through the Steam Workshop DRM controls again? In the name of users, why does there need to be this segregation in the user base that you describe?

Mod DB & Nexusmods?

Mods made by users are not subject to the developers whim, if the mod maker wants to upload it somewhere else, they can, if not they won't. I've never heard anyone demand the developers make modders put their mods somewhere else to let others access them. If you ask really nicely, maybe the mod creator will host a mirror somewhere.

NecroHeather is just stating the fact that, given the game has been out for some time already on Steam, there are lots of mods there and if available to you, they can be installed on your DRM-free GOG version.


Is modding as simple as that MegaDancer makes it seem? Do I just have to use the same directory structure and naming scheme to have the game overwrite the base when I activate it? And is there any kind of tutorial around yet?

All mods by their nature are DRM free it's just a matter of accessing them. Check out the official NecroDancer forums to see who's got mods hosted elsewhere.

Sad to see there's no way to get the mods from Steam Workshop to work without the Steam version (the files themselves are locked behind something).

You could request on the Steam forums that mod authors upload their mods to other sites.
