Hello,

I've encountered a problem when I launched Cossacks.

Installation goes smoothly (as far as I can tell) and when I launched the game, I get a series of 3 intros, then the game goes back to windows, and then goes back fullscreen and this is where it crashes.

The error message says :

Title : ERROR

Direct Draw Init Failed (80004001)

I can only click "Ok" and then it says the Cossacks has crashed.

I've tried disabling the UAC, running it as administrator, making it compatible with windows xp (service pack 3).

Still the same error

I'm currently running win7 64

Hope someone can help
I've checked the forums and couldn't find many threads with similar problems, so I decided to create a thread just for these as all the other persons who've had the same problem were on threads with different issues.

If anyone has an idea how to fix this, I'd be extremely grateful.

Edit: Ignore everything I'm saying here and try the patch that pisces72 linked to further below.

Hi, don't know if you're still looking for a solution but I'm just gonna post this: this error commonly occurs when a DirectDraw application is trying to force screen settings that are not supported by the system, be it the resolution, color depth or refresh rate.

So what's more important than the OS is what kind of device you're using (desktop, laptop, netbook?) and what the native resolution of your screen is as well as the graphics card. I'm not sure whether there is a definite solution but that information may at least confirm the cause.

While Cossacks is perfectly flexible when it comes to the ingame resolutions the main menu is probably hardcoded for one specific resolution (I'm not sure which one, though, probably 800x600, maybe 1024x768). But who knows, maybe there's a way to work around this problem.
