squawkbox: I have a similar problem - I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 and the mouse doesn't work in Cossacks. Makes it impossible to get beyond the initial menu. First problem I've encountered with any GOG games, but I hope someone is working on fixing it.
Thread bump. Having the same issue.

mirrizevolun: Very easy solution: go to the installation folder of the gam(s) and use dmcr.exe instead of the Cossacks.exe in order to start the game.
I tried that and it the game opens up and I can hear music, but I just have a black screen. I also tried running it in Compatibility mode and that only brought up a ton of Error messages.

Edit: Nevermind I found the patch and it works now. Colors are weird but at least the game runs. I'm not playing Cossacks for the graphics anyway.

Google cossacks color fix ;-) You'll probaby have to suspend explorer.exe for the duration of play which can be automated via a batch script.
This game works in my Windows 8.1 64 bit OS when I use the dmcr.exe for the version I want to play. I've tested every version's dmcr.exe.

Thanks for posting this solution mirrizevolun.
I've also had to set dmcr.exe to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode to fix 2 bugs I experienced on my PC:
1. The resolution couldn't be chosen when I opened the settings menu from the main menu because no resolutions were listed in the drop down box.
2. Changing the game speed setting during a singleplayer game would cause a game crash.

This fix worked for me too, thanks.
