Hey Folks,

I have just bought the Cossacks II Anthology but can not get "Battle for Europe" nor "Napoleonic Wars" running...
I get following error when I want to start the game:

"Runtime Error!
Program: ...amapps\common\CossacksII - Battle for Europe\engine.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the application`s support team for more information"

Could not find any solution so far...
Would be glad if someone got an idea. Thx!

DirectPlay is required to launch the game.

For me it installed itself when I first attempted to launch the game.

If it didn't happen to you, try installing DirectPlay manually.

I think it's an outdated functionality that is not installed by default in new versions of Windows.

Thank you for your answer. I would like to try that, but do you also happen to know where I can find a legal/official (and virus free) source to get DirectPlay?
Btw, I have Windows 7 and I can only find Instructions for Windows 8 / 10.

I think it's located in Add/Remove programs / functions app and then you have to choose add functionality and search for directplay.

But I don't have windows 7.

I already tried that, but it is not listed on Win 7...
I also couldn find a valid download source.
Anyone else an idea?
Thx!

I got the same issue and I've sent a word to GOG support, I guess you should do the same as well, they might do something about it if they get more people asking for the same issue or give us a proper refund.

First read this about the minimum system requirements of the graphics device:
https://www.gog.com/forum/cossacks_series/cossacks_ii_anthology_on_gogcom/post11

Second, if it is not your case and if it is(maybe) a problem of DirectPlay, try install DirectX:
DirectPlay is a deprecated API that was part of Microsoft's DirectX API, the last release of DirectX containing DirectPlay is August 2007, which it is included in this (June 2010) for operating systems since Windows XP Service Pack 2 to Windows 7:
DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
Hi all! The game crashed on my system (windows 7) when starting it up. What I did was to change the properties of the engine.exe like in the attached image. Then it started successfully, though it now crashes when the game is exited.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Unfortunately none of them worked for me.
I also contacted the gog-support.
Here are there troubleshooting steps:

Your computer is running Windows 7 so you do not have to install DirectPlay.

Please follow these troubleshooting steps:
1) Please make sure that you use "Run as Administrator" to install and to start the game (right-click on the shortcut or setup file and select "Run as Administrator"). If you are using Galaxy, then make sure to run Galaxy as Administrator.

2) Please reinstall the game AND add it to your anti-virus/firewall software's exception/trusted list. Simply disabling firewall or AV software could not be enough, since some of these software are running still in background or in services list. If you are using Galaxy, then please add Galaxy as well.

3) Reinstall the June 2010 DirectX runtime package. You can find the archive file containing the 2010 package installation files here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

You will have to extract the files into some folder, then open that folder and launch the DXSETUP.exe file in order to proceed with the installation.

After that please download and install DirectX Web Installer:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35

Please have in mind that this will only add DirectX 9.0c to available pool of DirectX libraries, and it will not overwrite your other versions. Some games are not able to utilize newer DirectX libraries, and they require DirectX 9.0c.

4) Please update your graphics device drivers:
http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support

5) Go to the main folder where the game is installed(default: C:\GOG Games\Cossacks II - Napoleonic Wars), right-click on engine.exe and select: run as administrator.

I tried all of these steps, none of them worked for me, but maybe they will work for someone else.

This work for me:
in game folder/engine.exe Properties/Compatibility/ mark only:
-Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
-Disable visual themes
-Disable desktop composition
-Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
GOG release of this game is broken. Tried Steam version and everything works perfectly. GOG version is not working after many attempts using all the methods described in posts above.
Seriously, GOG just needs to release the same version as at Steam (which is 30% larger in size for some reason).
# Cossacks 2 - Napoleon Wars (DE) - Tested on Windows 10 2004 in FullHD on GTX 1080 (Native - No Compatibility Mode needed)
# Patches are taken from patches-scrolls(dot)com/cossacks2.php

# Install Cossacks

# Install Patch c2_patch_v1_2.zip

# Extract D3Dengine.dll & startengine.exe from c2-hoae-3d-patch.zip to Cossacks2-Folder\Data

# Copy d3d8.dll from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 to Cossacks2-Folder\Data (Win32-Subsystem on x64 Windows) - If you dont have the file in the folder then you need to install DirectX SDK (June 2010) from Microsoft

# Install legacy DirectPlay-API (As Administrator)
Dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:"DirectPlay" /All

# Consider always installing the following components to get all the dll's you need and circumvent various common problems with old games:
# DirectX SDK (June 2010) - uninstall VC Redistributables, when you already have them to avoid Installation Error S1023
# Windows SDK
# VC++ Redistributable 2005, 2008 SP1, 2010 SP1, 2012, 2013 and 2019 (includes 2015 & 2017)
i have a strange problem. the game does not work, as the "Engine" is started as a "BACKGROUND process"!! wtf GOG? i was hoping to play it legally but well......
I have 2 installations of Windows 7 ultimate x64.

And on one it starts without problems and on the other it crashes at start with the same error message posted here.

I now went on to compare, what is different on the systems.

And even though I have no definitive answer yet. I realized that the computer running Cossacks 2 had 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012 c++ redistributables (both for x86 and x64) while the one with the crashing one only had 2012 and up redistributables.

Now I installed 2005, 2008 and even though the game still does not start, I get a different error message now...
It now says Runtime error
....\engine.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support for more information.

Maybe if it is running you could check with Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes are installed and if it is crashing check which one you have.

Maybe there is still some dll from some other program present. But this is the right track in my humble opinion.

Kind regards, Martin
