Okay let me start by saying if, like me, you get the bug where your saved game disappears because your pc restarts, you will not get it back.
Alright now that that's out of the way, let me tell you a story.
I fired up Control tonight, after buying it on the 9th. I saw it defaulted to Medium settings and in typical graphics snob fashion, I attempted to max it out. The intro was incredibly choppy, and when I got into the game, it lagged, and when I moved in a direction, I kept moving after not pressing the key anymore. Moving the mouse, the game would randomly stop. So I set it back to default (Medium) and the game played fine after a reload.
So I get cute, and after getting about 20 minutes in, I want my shiny 5700 XT to work a little bit. So I set the textures from "Medium" to "Ultra" and in under 2 minutes the game crashed and my pc completely restarted. This only happens when I play certain games and only through Galaxy.
Anyway, at this point, I load the game back up, and the saved game was gone. It kept saying "Your saved game cannot be recovered. If you continue, your campaign will be lost" or some such, then going back to desktop, flickering a few times, and not allowing me to get back into the game.
Here's the important part, which is the fix if this happens to you.
Go into the game directory and manually fire up the DX11 executable. It will do the same thing, but this time when it goes to desktop, it won't flicker, and you mouse over its window and you can maximize it immediately. DO NOT FORGET TO SET YOUR TEXTURES BACK TO WHATEVER THEY WERE BEFORE!!!!
I haven't figured out how to recover your save at this point, but since I was only 20 minutes in, it wasn't important. The important thing is, my game, which I was locked out of due to me stupidly wanting to push my 5700 XT too hard, is now playable again.
I strongly encourage anyone with a mid range card to not push it hard with this game, especially if you have AMD. Just leave it on whatever settings it defaults to. That moment the pc auto restarts when you've got a bunch of things open makes the butthole pucker.
Goodnight and good luck, agents. Glad I picked this title up!
