BTW, I love this game! I bought it when it was released and still have it though haven't been able to play it for ages. GOG rules!
As far as I know, you have to copy those files with 8-digit number/letter combinations and .GE2 and .TE2 extensions. Four of these are pre-made (scenarios, I presume), but you can just copy them as well (since they are the same in the other folder).
Regarding the game... similar experiences here. Although I didn't own the game when it was released (heck, my computer didn't even have a CD-ROM drive in that time!), I got it a couple of years later. However, after quite some time, the disk got scratched beyond repair, thus I couldn't play it any more. You can imagine how glad I was when I saw it in the GOG catalogue the very first time I signed in :-).
