Has anyone tried running the game on Windows 8? Any results?

Crashes on launch for me with a conquest has stopped working message.
Tried compatibility mode, dropping graphics settings, disabling UAC, re-downloading (with installer). : /

I get "Conquest cannot run on this graphics card."

I'm having the same problem as Knave99 running it on Windows 8 (running on 2011 MacBook Pro w Intel Graphics running Windows 8 via Bootcamp). It immediately crashes with the same error message (conquest has stopped working message). In addition to his troubleshooting, I also tried to install it to the Program Files (x86) directory like most of the other GOG games by default. No success. If it runs on Windows 7, there should be no reason it would not run on Windows 8 on the same box.

From what I have been told, according to Eric Peterson (one of the developers of the original) it currently doesn't work on Windows 8. He was asked about it on the chat to Star Citizen and he said that.

I wonder what he means by currently...

I'm not sure he said currently, but I'm sure GOG will be working on getting it working on Win 8.

That's a rather convoluted way to just install Windows XP on a virtual machine. If you have an XP CD lying around, you can just install something like VirtualBox and then install XP inside of it.

Well, yeah, but if you don't have an installation disk you do this. Do you have a better idea right now? Because if you have I wouldn't mind hearing it... By the way I tried VirtualBox and it doesn't work on it, so VMplayer is a must have.

I managed to get it to work in VirtualBox, no problems. I think the VirtualBox issue has to do with having Hyper-V installed or enabled in Windows 8 pro, from what I read in the Oracle forums.

I would not have even looked at any of this were it not for your effort and detailed instructions, thank you. The only thing I don't like is using that "antiWPA"... I think I have a spare copy of XP laying around though, so I will just use that if I can dig it up. I wish MS would just release the XP mode for free to Win 7 and 8 users-- no WPA needed.

Funny, I have Win 8 pro (from a Windows 7 upgrade), but Hyper-V is not present... oh well, VirtualBox works just as well.

Hmm, the problem I had with VirtualBox was the 3d accelerator didn't seem to work so all the ships looked flat and the graphics ancient. As for the antiWPA well, I too have an old copy of XP and I tried the code and it didn't work...

Not working for me on VirtualBox either. The 3D driver is installed, but the game still complains about no 3D card being available. Checking with dxdiag, it seems like DirectX 7 Direct3D rendering is not working (8 and 9 work fine however), which I assume CFW is using... Off to trying with VMWare then :)

On a side note, wish GoG would make it more visible when a game is not compatible with a specific version of Windows. Sure, it's my fault for not checking thoroughly before buying to begin with, but it would be nice to be able to maybe specify your version of Windows in your profile so GoG can ensure all is well at checkout and warn you if there's a possibility it may not work.
