I applied the following initial solution (since I 've only checked the first "Terran Campaign" mission start only), using the retail CD of the game, but it will probably also work with the GoG and Steam versions.
For the CD version only, since the GoG version is already updated, with the latest patch:
Download and apply the 1.07 Patch
(
http://www.moddb.com/games/conquest-frontier-wars1/downloads/conquest-frontier-wars-patch-107)
For all versions:
Open conquest.ini (located in the folder that the game is installed, with your favorite text editor. My personal choice is Notepad++, since it is very powerfull, but easy to use at the same time. You will find it here:
https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v7.4.2.html . (Also make a back up copy of it, in case you make a mistake in editing it).
Find the following entry:
[Features]
LimitResolutions = off ; on = limit to 640x480 -> 1024x768
and change it to:
[Features]
LimitResolutions =
on ; on = limit to 640x480 -> 1024x768,
so as to unlock all the available resolutions.
Do the same for the following entry:
[System]
.
.
.
IRenderPipeline = RendSft
and change it into:
[System]
.
.
.
IRenderPipeline =
Rend0 This entry will force the game to use an DirectX renderer, instead of the unsupported software one.
Save your new version of conquest.ini, since we are done with file editing!!
The game will now start, but you will probably encounter graphical glitches, when you try to access the options screen. (Pink screens etc.)
Download dgVoodoo 2 ( version 2.54 from
http://dege.freeweb.hu/ ) and unzip it to a folder of your choice. (dgVoodoo is an extremelly powerfull Direct/Glide wrapper. It will intercept the unsupported DirectX or Glide software calls from the game, and it will "translate" them, in DX11 calls that the current version of windows understands).
In the folder that you unzipped dgVoodoo, you will find another folder named MS. Copy the contents of this folder, (three files:
D3D8.dll, D3DImm.dll, DDraw.dll), into the folder that you installed Conquest - Frontier Wars.
Remain in the dgVoodoo folder and double click dgVoodooCpl.exe . The dgVoodoo Control Panel will launch, and you 'll need to select the Direct X tab.
From the videocard drop down menu select "
dgVoodoo Virtual 3D Accelerated Card".
From the VRAM drop down menu select "
1024 MB".
That's it. You sould now be able to play the game, with no glitches, and with widescreen resolutions.
