Best solution for me was:

1. Using Windows Explorer, duplicate/copy the main executable and rename it to comMandos.exe (mine is at "C:\Games\Commandos\comandos.exe")
2. Rename comandos.exe to _comandos.exe (or something else, doesn't matter as long as you rename it)
3. start a CMD prompt as administrator
4. make a symbolic link named comandos.exe to your new "C:\Games\Commandos\comMandos.exe" by typing in the CMD box:

mklink comandos.exe "C:\Games\Commandos\comMandos.exe"

5. Restart GOG Galaxy (or restart Windows)

You don't need the symbollic link. Simply link the renamed executable within Galaxy.

How do I do this? I tried the "import folder" thing, but it just installed a new Comandos.exe that I couldn't run. I can still run the game with the alternate renames, but it probably doesn't log my hours into Galaxy. Help please?

In Galaxy, right-click on the game card, go to Manage Installation -> Configure. Then, enable custom executables, scroll to the bottom and click on "Add another executable" and browse to commandos.exe. This will create a new entry that you can even choose the "Default executable" option for so it always runs the renamed executable whenever you hit Play. Press OK and you're done.

Thank you, it works perfectly now. I just need to apply the patch so the mission briefing sounds don't glitch out.

Thank you both. I don't know why making a copy of a file works when the original doesn't, but I got the game running in Windows 11 by doing this and then linking to the renamed file in Galaxy.

It's because Windows' internal compatibility database contains a typo.

hello,

thank you for this message I have the Direct X5 issue but I can't find the main executable you write about. Mine is GOG-commando behind enemy lines.exe, its on desktop and I can't copy it to rename it.

Does not work fine with the last version of ddrawcompat?

Download the dll and copy it along the commandos exe. delete any compatibility setting in the original exe and it should work.

In case anyone is still struggling with this, try no installing the game from galaxy, but instead download the offline installer and use that. I got a Commandos_w10 executable that way which was missing when I installed the game from galaxy. Weird but o well... it worked. I still find it a bit sluggish compared to running on a windows 9x system but it is playable at least

Hi, the fix to "DIRECT X 5 NOT FOUND" is:
Download DDrawCompat in Github and replace in the game folder.
Rename comandos.exe to commandos.exe for BEL.
Download the Commandos BEL/BTCOD Resolution Hacker and apply.
Work in Commandos: BEL and BTCOD.
I am using Win11 x64.
TESTED IN THE GOG VERSION.

The "custom exutable" doesnt work for me. Any other "simple fix" ideas? annoyed at GOG at this point, this is the third game, that ive bought and cant launch. Not looking forward to 3rd party solutions, or addons, or programs or w/e

you need to rename the original executable file and add the letter m

What I did was change the target in the shortcut in the same folder, so I can use that if I want to launch from my desktop.

In Galaxy I added an additional executable as mentioned a few posts above and now if I launch in Galaxy, I click the last button in the middle top (lines with dots) -> Additional Executables -> Play (beneath Manual; this can be given any name set during the adding process)
