Firstly, I'd like to say thank you so much for letting me re-download the installers for CMR05 and TOCA 3. They are the only reason I've been holding off reloading my PC. I was certain that once I wiped my HDD I'd lose them forever after they were pulled from the shop (I deleted the installers because, hey, I could always re-download them...right?). But I've just noticed that I can get them again, downloading (and backing up) now. Was it always like that or was something resolved with Codemasters?
Anyway, since I'm wiping and starting fresh with Windows 7, I'm gonna have to back up my profile and progress (no way in hell I'm starting fresh now :)). Whereabouts are the saved games saved - in the user folder, program folder or elsewhere (I'm currently using Vista)? I should just be able to place these back in the same place and go shouldn't I?

The games were never removed from the download servers. I don't know what happened with Codemasters, the games still got pulled so that they can no longer be purchased from GOG, but the downloads have remained available to those who have them in their GOG account.
I have CMR2005 and Vista Ultimate x64. My saved games are stored in:
C:\Games\Colin McRae Rally 2005\SG
Though I have installed to C:\Games which is an unprotected folder. Installing to Program Files (which is a protected folder) may mean they go into your user profile:
C:\Users\<Profile Name>\...
I do have an SG folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG\Colin McRae Rally 2005\, but it's empty. It's definitely somewhere in the user folder because when I log on as a different user the save slot disappears.
What's the name/extension of your savegame, so I can do a search?
Try to look in
C:\Users\*your_username*\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\GOG.com\CMR2005
If you're on Win7 64 bit instead of Program Files try Program Files (x86) in the path above.

That's the one, found it in my backup. Bizarre path to save it, given that there's now a dedicated "Saved Games" directory in each User folder. Cheers for that.
What about saved game settings like resolution and quality? They won't recover even if I restore this profile folder.
The career saves are restored, but the settings made in the game are not.

the game also resets the settings every time you turn it off.
