I have a weird issue when playing on my Windows 8.1 laptop. A minute or so after starting the active phase of a battle (by clicking "begin"), the screen freezes.

The computer stays responsive, and the battle keeps on going behind the screen (I can hear all the sounds). I can even hit the escape key and end the battle through the dialog that appears. It's just that the display never changes and I can't click anything.

The problem persists after starting another battle, but this time it's frozen straight from the start, even in the deployment phase.

I've been playing for the last couple of days on two laptops, but I never had this issue. The only thing that's different today is that I'm running on laptop battery, not plugged in. I tried setting the laptop to performance mode (in case the lowered CPU clock rates were causing the issue), but it didn't help. I can try running it plugged in in the evening and see if anything changes.

Edit: BTW, this is CC3

It just happened with the laptop plugged in, it just took a lot longer this time. So it's not the battery.

It's happening on the weird map with the huge Stalingrad factory, so that may have something to do with it?
You should add some more infos about your system, esp. Videocard, drivers, cpu and ram.

I only remember that CC3 had a problem with some amd-viedeocards, disabling the videos and running it windowed
was supposed to help but i never had problems by myself so i can only repeat what i read.

It's an Intel integrated GPU on an older two-core i5, with 8 GB of RAM, Windows 8.1. I can find out which CPU/GPU exactly, if you'd like to know.

Anyway, after a bit of playing around, I managed to solve the issue. I set the .exe's compatibility mode to Windows 98. It's the first time that helped me so I was shocked, honestly.

Because of the compatibility mode, I also had to reduce my resolution from 1080p to 1280x720, so it might actually have been the resolution, not the compatibility setting.

I am having the very same problem with freezeing except I get half way into the game. Would liked to have seen someone reply as I can't keep it like this....

Did you notice that I managed to solve my issue?

I had this problem and was able to fix it in CC3 with compatibility settings, but that doesn't work in CC4. This is running Windows 8.1.

When I try to use Win 95 or 98 compatibility, it just spins and never starts up. In XP mode, regardless of resolution, the UI usually freezes up within a few minutes of gameplay (although the battle goes on and it's always possible to hit escape and go back to the main menu). Setting it to a low resolution did seem to change how long it lasted, but I really didn't do enough testing to be sure it wasn't just a coincidence.

I still have a machine that can boot to XP so I may try that, but it does appear that this is an issue at least in Windoes 8.

It's (Win95 compatible mode with lower resolution) work for me: win8.1, AMD Integr.GC, Mobile Intel I5. Thank you! And HNY to all.

Try prog that called DXWnd. In this one shell set compatibility with win95 mode in "Compat." tab, then add (+) Active tweaks on "Tweaks" tab: ddraw:AllowSysMemoryOn3DDevices + ddraw:BlitFromBackbuffer. This tabs is allowed if turn on "Expert mode@ in option. On tab "Main" set "No banner" option "Fullscreen only" and "Acquire admin caps" (need first launch for add security settings). On tab set "Screen resolution" option as "Native" and "Initial resolution" as 1280x720.
