I have McAfee and currently one cannot enter an exception in real time scanning, never needed to before so this is the first time this has caused a problem for me. My only option is to turn off real time scanning whilst playing the game and also keep a zipped copy of the dll in the game file because as soon as I turn real time scanning on it removes the dll as a Trojan.
G.O.G. claim they have asked the AV companies to white list this dll and I whilst I understand they cannot contact every single AV company it would seem that either they have failed to contact at least one of the major companies or McAfee are not complying as yet.
I also think that their suggestion that those having problems should contact their AV providers to get the dll white listed is a sloppy answer and that a patch or new dll should be issued. I have never had any problems with G.O.G. games and will continue to purchase them but I will definitely wait a while and read the forums before buying another newer game release. The only reason I bought this game without forum comments was because the price deal was so good and that makes the dll irritation almost acceptable.
G.O.G. have been amazing at fixing problems quickly in the past so let us hope that this type of problem is not going to be a trend with the newer games, gamers just want to load and play without going through all the hoops of DRM problems or complex work arounds, some games are known to be buggy but apart from patching to the latest version and making them work on modern PC's I don't believe that it is G.O.G's responsibility to debug them however, this problem is not a game bug it is a DRM removal problem and therefore solving it is squarely in G.O.Gs court.
You're right, this could have probably been handled better by gog, here's hoping they do something about it.

Having said i don't know how you, or anyone else, would want to use a product, free or otherwise, that makes it impossible for the human user to override what a few lines of code decided. Software that locks the user out of the decision loop is crappy software, period.
I'm having the same problem with ESET Nod32. Worse, it quarantines during the install process and crashes the install so even after I whitelist the file it's too late.

Reinstalling causes the same problem all over again.

Create the install folder beforehand and exclude the entire folder before installing the game on the folder you created.

I agree with you, apparently McAfee did not activate the facility with last year’s release but suggested it would eventually be activated, there is a trusted items panel but it is impossible to make an entry into the panel.
Because I never used the facility I didn't realise that it had been deactivated until this problem and I did some research.
Like many others, because it came with the computer I had it automatically renewed every year as it seemed to work well. When the current license expires I am changing to another AV provider, probably the one my wife has as it provides 3 licenses for the same price I paid for my McAfee single license.
One tends to assume that certain important user functions will not be removed / deactivated without the user being notified especially in an AV program. Well, McAfee have now lost a regular customer.

Workaround for McAfee users:

Just reporting, that Avira doesn't seem to mess the installation, but it bugs you persistently about it afterwards.

I was able to play the game, though.

Ah yes, i sure can relate to that, sometimes software changes in unexpected ways from one year to the next and we end up having to clean up the mess.

Anyway, here's hoping the white listing process with the AV engines that still flag the file will go smoothly.
