The combat and stealth looked interesting and I'd heard good things, but I'm playing through now and it just seems incredibly... "generic first person shooter"ish.

The melee combat started off mildly interesting. I wasn't amazed but assumed it would get better as I got more practice and further in. I've played far enough to pick up a few guns now and every single fight is obviously scripted. You cross an invisible line, the enemies are triggered, and they either shoot you immediately or get into position for you to kill them by surprise. There's no thinking and no freedom, and my motivation to keep playing is pretty much gone.

Does it stay like this throughout or does it open up a bit?
I've made it through a few more fights and am still disappointed.

Shooting out lights would be more interesting if it wasn't just a matter of shooting the light out, then getting a headshot when they magically forget about you and stand up.

I'll plug away at a few more fights per night until I hit another area to be sure.

After avoiding it for years because of the console newbie no quicksaves (until I found that they could be enabled after all). I have to say that, so far, it's a boring shooter with boring guns and boring enemies.
