Hi there.

I so hope that there will be a Mac version of Chaos Overlords. It was one of my all time favorite games that I played on my mac back in the day. The day you release it, is the day I will gladly provide my hard earned money for it! I know there are many other Mac users who want to see this released as well. Please make this happen.

Thank you for showing your support for the Mac OS.

The developer has said on facebook that GOG is working on a Mac version. This was back in June, so no idea on a release date. Unfortunately GOG is apparently porting the WIndows version instead of updating the IMO superior native Mac version.

This was the dev's facebook post:

The Mac release will be the Windows version of CO. The source code is here, but they just wanted the binary. They only needed to ask for it...

I sure hope that GoG releases it for the Mac, that is a game I loved and enjoyed so much. I have my money ready to gladly hand it over when it is released...Please make it happen GoG! I am counting on you!

Can't we just get it fixed and recompiled if the guy has the source code? or am I missing something important?
The creator posted this on Facebook on March 6: "Chaos Overlords on GOG: They don't seem to be motivated to produce the Mac version anymore. They also aren't interested in fixing the white block error in the Windows version of the game. The product is a wrapper around our original exe, so we don't have the ability to make a Mac build or fix bugs. Both issues are quite disappointing to us."

So from the sounds of things, you should be taking the issue up with GOG. Disappointing, indeed.

Is this something that GOG needs to be called out on? I can understand not necessarily wanting to spend time on a Mac version if the original isn't selling terribly well, but if the "white block error" is a significant problem, maybe I need to take it up with the community forum.

(although maybe I should email GOG support first to hear their case on the matter)

My understanding is that the "white block error" is only an issue on Windows 8 now. The game card doesn't list Windows 8 compatibility, so it's not like GOG is selling a broken game and not admitting it. As for the Mac version, I'd be inclined to see if GOG wants to comment first - CO has always been a bit twitchy on modern systems, and it may be that the resources required to get it running on a modern Mac are just out of all proportion to the expected returns.

Okay, well maybe that's fair. It would be nice to see Windows 8 compatibility at least.

To me that sounds like the dev want's GOG to do all the fixing. Truthfully, it's impossible to know with the information we have. Does the creator have a working relationship with the publisher?

Same guy. One-man team. According to his FB page he's willing to share the source code with GOG, but they either haven't asked or didn't take him up on it (it's a little unclear whether he offered and they said no, or whether he's just saying he /would/ share it if they asked.)

Just looked, released 1996. That would be Mac Classic OS, pre OS X, and no particular help to GOG with current Macs even with the source.

Yeah, I meant more in terms of the Windows issues, not the Mac version.

Oh, I see. If he's the publisher & dev I'm not sure why he can't fix things though? Wouldn't hurt GOG to work on it from their end either if he won't.

Hey guys,

We don't have the manpower or resources to take the PowerPC* Mac version of Chaos Overlords and make it compatible with today's Macs. As of right now, the Windows version doesn't work on Macs via Wine and, thus, we cannot offer a Mac-compatible wrapped version of Chaos Overlords. Sorry :(

*because that would require digging through code that isn't our own and try to update it to modern Mac architectures. I don't know about you guys but to me that sounds like a very, very massive undertaking.
