I've tried starting out a game a couple of times, first as a Beginner to get a feel for the game, then as a Duke.

Both times, regardless of what is going on, I eventually start getting the message 'No Workers' when I try and assign work to parts of my castle, and so I stop getting stuff built. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've got plenty of laborers and gold.

Okay, when you right click and select Labour, what have you selected? There should be a healthy mix of labourers, carpenters, smith etc. I usually press the "Hire" button to add more workers (all types).
I was running with the pre-set ratio from Beginner, which I also used for my Duke game: it's like 2:1:1:2:2:1:1. As in, 200 diggers, 100 carpenters and so on.

Haven't changed these ratios since I started, so my rating never moved from Satisfactory. But all the little workers are on the screen moving around, yet building has ceased.

Maybe you pressed 'f', which changes the view of the castle. If the workers are still there, then maybe you are seeing it from the opposite side.
I ended up tearing down all the unfinished walls and redesigned them, at which point workers started doing what they're supposed to again.

This game seems to be a little 'twitchy' in general. For example, I'll try and change the number of laborers on a segment of wall or tower, and then I click another segment. But when I click the first segment again, the change often doesn't take; I sometimes have to make the change several times before it sticks. Very frustrating.

But thanks for trying to help out. :)

Edit: After they finished a segment of wall, they decided to stop again. Blah. I'm going to give Castles 2 a try now, and maybe I'll come back to this one later.

Okay, too bad I couldn't help. I don't recall that happening to me. However sometimes workers go on strike in which case I have to re-check each wall,.

Edit: Accidents may also occur, and whenever that happens, workers may be lost.

I ran into this problem too. Then I thought "I only control how many workers I put on a section. Not what workers." There is a reason there are different kinds of workers. Certain kinds are needed during certain phases of a section's building process. If you try to spread your workers out (say 20-30 to a section), The game will allocate all the *necessary* workers it can to as many sections as possible. However, I do not think it releases them when they are no longer needed for that phase of building. So(!), to overcome this you either need to A: Find a golden ratio of all the worker types or B: Just put max labour on as many sections as you can and let the game figure it out. I chose B.
