I've downloaded Carmageddon from GOG. The obvious choice was to use Wine to run the GOG installer, and I did so. Though I tried to use the bundled DosBox through Wine, I was unsurprised when I got nothing but the game's sounds and a black screen, so I stopped it and moved on.
I downloaded DosBox, which seems to fix the graphical issue when I run CARMA.EXE through it, but one anomalously asks me to insert the Splat Pack CD, and the other asks for a password to access the explicit and bloody version.
I find myself at a loss. Anybody know how to make this happen? I'm using Xubuntu 12.10, which is Ubuntu with an XFCE shell. Everything's current stable version, as I'm not the adventurous type.

Found this: Linux DosBox in General Discussion
However, while it's straightforward information, it's hard to see how to apply it to the mass of .exes and .confs which are installed in the Carmageddon folder. I'm trying to untangle it all, but so far I've had no luck.
I suppose I'll try a few other Dos games and see if part of my problem is DosBox itself.

Hi, there aren't that many exes :). Go to CARMA or CARSPLAT folder (depending on which game you want to play). CARM95.exe is Windows executable so I guess you can try and run it from WINE. CARMA.exe is used to run from DOS (DOSBox). If you want to run it from DOSBox, use dosboxCARMA.conf. You can specify which conf to run with game, this is how it's done in Windows:
C:\Games\Carmageddon\DOSBOX\dosbox.exe -conf dosboxCARMA.conf -noconsole -c "exit"

You could do something like that in DOSBox on your Linux installation, I think I've done it some time ago and really can't remember it (not on this game). Hope at least some of this helps.
Have you actually succesfully tried running Carmageddon using Dosbox? I have tried it and although I don't consider myself novice, I was not succesful.

I think that it has something to do with the 3Dfx support, so something like this may be needed:

I haven't tried that, though.

That's just it, though. It sort of worked, but the Splat Pack seemed to think it needed a CD, and the other required some kind of pass key, lest it exclusively play where the pedestrians are zombies.
Very strange. I assume configuration files are the problem at this point, but turning the above advice to DosBox use hasn't yet been successfully done on my part.
This is my experience with an old copy from my disk:

If gog version has carma95.exe you should be done.
I found a way to make the game run fine on DosBox linux but I can't post my conf file here because the forum detects folder paths as links and says I can't post links yet -.-'

So I found a way of posting my solution... through a link xD

Here it is:
pastebin dot com slash RqEq95ch
Oh, that does look interesting... It'll be a few days before I'm likely to get ambitious enough to try it out. I know that seems silly, but I have a toddler, so time for most any endeavour is little and far between.
Anybody else who takes a shot at this in the meantime, perhaps trying out Ricardo's .ini file, do report back. All else fails, as stated, I'll get to it myself in a little while.

Edit: No CARMA95.exe is evident to me, but I may be blind. If it is in fact there, it may help to recommend a file path.

The password (gog) worked, but for some reason it asks me for the CD and won't let me move on from there. Clearly I'm doing something slightly wrong here.

It's been long enough, I guess, that I can't get that config file from Pastebin anymore. Do you still have it somewhere?
since an update to dosbox the game runs with vertical black stripes on the screen and now I don't know what I did but it stopped seeing the CARMA folder as the game CD and asks for the CD. When I get it working I'll share here.

this is what I have now
pastebin . com / U1GcefRX

good luck
Thank you. I'll try that.
Didn't have a lot of luck with that, but I tried PlayOnLinux, and after some initial problems managed to get it to work on Wine version 1.6.2-dos_support_0.6 . Not sure why it works now.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work well enough on my computer to actually be playable, but that's its own problem.

So I've been mucking about with this, trying to set it up for my file tree. I'm running into the same CD issue. No solution on your end yet?

Do you happen to know which DosBox it worked on before?

Hi, my pc has been damaged by a lightning storm 2 weeks ago and I'll buy a new one next month. I haven't messed arount with this. But it started showing graphics issues when I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04. So I stopped playing since then. Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.10 and DosBox had an update later, but no luck either. Then it started asking for the CD. I googled for a solution and I found some tutorial on how to create an CUE/ISO image of the CD and using it in DOSBOX but haven't tried it
