It makes me sad that Call To Power has sort of slipped through the cracks of the various Civilization fan communities and has almost become lost to time. A few times I've come across lost people asking for help on CTP issues as they just didn't know where to go and ask. I hope to maybe rebuild a bit of a CTP presence on the forums and on social media so that CTP fans know that there's places they can go and talk about the games and get help on issues and exchange cool mods etc. Stopping the rot and righting this wrong will be a bit of a side project I plan to work on over the next few years.

In the meantime I feel it's important to build a database of just what's left out there so that CTP refugees can find each other...

Firstly where can fans even get the games now? CTP1 is stuck in licensing hell due to its use of the Civilization name however maybe with pressure GoG might release a modified version with the Civ branding removed. Thankfully CTP2 didn't have that problem so its available!

Secondly for forums this is pretty much everything I can find now...

Thirdly for social media groups there's an old reddit group and I'm working with others on building up some new CTP Discord & FB groups too..

https://www.reddit.com/r/ctp2/

Fourthly for patches/mods/resources we lost the old Apolyton downloads area a decade ago so I've been working to rebuild it at CFC. There's also some barely used ModDB pages that could be a good place for large mod files too!

Lastly amazingly the Apolyton Edition of CTP2 built from it's source code is still being worked on and some of the guys have been dropping by the new CTP Discord. They hope to fix CTP2's infamous multiplayer bugs in future versions.

I also backed up what I believe to be the last official compiled Apolyton CTP2 Edition Revision 1111 release back in 12-Jun-2011 to CivFanatics here a while back:

Since I had many issues with the original source and with Apolyton (they keep all the old Windows dependencies that cause issues on modern systems). I have created my own port to help people play this game on modern Windows with the GOG release.

Link: https://bitbucket.org/call-to-power-ii/ctp2/downloads/

I have ported the game to SDL2 on Windows and provided both 32bit and 64bit executables.

Hope this helps you all out!

Thank you so very much! I downloaded it as well. I have the apolyton version, I'm not sure how recent it is though. Maybe 6 to 8 years old. I'll check the comparison. I did get a crash when creating a new game.

Error Message: Could not load library dll\\map\\geometric.dll

TB

Edi: I figured it out, you have to copy the DLL folder as well to the correct location.

Correct, this is explained in the readme file (copy all .dll, .exe etc..) if you just copy the dll folder and paste it in, that'll work too.

Why is your method superior to what was done in the Apolyton version? Is the loss of the movies worth it? What is actually gained?

Thought this is obvious.

Apolyton still use on Windows, ancient directsound, directplay, directdraw dependencies. This results in (by default) on Windows 10/11, a laggy mouse cursor, crashes and in-general a really poor experience.

Having an SDL2 version that is on-par with how the Linux port works (as in, it literally just works) is I think, worth it.

I just discovered this, and this is literally game-changing. Thank you so much!

I'm shouting this version out within the Discord (with credit of course), I've never seen any CTP2 mod like this. We would love to have you on the Discord as well, we could definitely use someone with the (clearly incredible) knowledge of the Apolyton / source code base that you possess.

Thanks :)

There are still a few little things I have to fix and that will be done soon too. I'm working on the wrapper I used to remove some of the unreleasable code I have used so that I can make this one open source. Not sure what to do about the FFMPEG stuff, I know some folks like the movies and some don't so it is a bit of a coin toss, but I'll see if I can implement a decent version that will not bring a whole heap of dependencies for the user (nothing good comes from dll hell).

How did you get this to build in linux?
I am having the hardest time getting the compilation to finish as I am getting errors from aui_sdlmovie.cpp due to AVCodecContext not being declared.
ui/aui_sdl/aui_sdlmovie.cpp:1581:9: error: ‘AVCodecContext’ was not declared in this scope; did you mean ‘AVIODirContext’?
1581 | AVCodecContext *avctx;

I am thinking it has to do with it getting linked to FFMPEG 6.0 and not 4.4 but I am not 100% sure.
If you have any insights, I gladly welcome them as wife and I want to play this game.
FYI I pulled from this repository: https://github.com/ptitSeb/ctp2

On my code: https://bitbucket.org/call-to-power-ii/ctp2-src/downloads/

I do not support movies, so this is removed. The FFMPEG code was never very good on Linux anyway and was sort of hacked in without any regard to maintainability. It never worked on some distro's. So try building mine, it should work since I provide Linux builds.

Noticed a new October 11th 2023 release. Good to see you're still working on your cool project! :) I hope you end up finding a solution to the movies issue as I'm one of the weird ones that kinda can't play without them lol.

A few interesting updates..

Kull is working on a CTP2 Apolyton Edition enhanced version of the popular Cradle mod:
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/kulls-making-cradle-3-fully-compatible-with-the-ctp2-apolyton-edition-project-cradle-5.683439/

As discussed above Spyroviper is working on a special optimized, faster bug free portable SDL2 version of the CTP2 Apolyton Edition:
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/call-to-power-2-sdl2-port-for-modern-windows-linux-macos.688176/

The admin of the CTP Discord Ninja is working on an enhanced modern mod loader & swapper for CTP1&2 as well as a new multiplayer server:
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/call-to-power-1-2-new-mod-manager.688175/
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/open-call-to-power-1-2-server-project.688177/

There's also the old excellent CTP2 Bureau mod knowledge base site still up:
http://ctp2.info/

Which also hosts the Apolyton Edition modding wiki:
http://www.ctp2.info/aewiki/

And the Modern Times mod:

Loving the mod. I don't need the movies or multiplayer, so this mod is perfect for me without.

I did have an issue with the latest windows build though (11/10/2023). I get a CTD every time I try to access the Great Library. It works fine on build 01/06/2023.

Edit: Also there is an annoying windows notification sound every time I press a key on the keyboard.

If there is a more appropriate place to post bugs for this mod please let me know.

Regarding the SDL port.

The contents of the ubuntu build is so different from the windows build you cannot use the instructions for one to install the other..... and it has no readme file.

And it seems like something still need to be compiled?
