I tried putting the quotes around the save, deleting the save text entirely, changing the save to read savepath=C:\BSSave\....nothing worked.

When I removed the savepath starting with the word "savepath", the game wouldn't launch at all.

I could use help, here.
Never mind. I created a new save folder on the root of C and redirected the saves to that folder. It worked.
Thanks for sharing this info!
Looks like different people are having different problems, and there is no single solution helping everyone. Which makes it difficult for GOG to find and implement a solution, I'm afraid.

In my case (Vista 32bit, in case it matters) putting quotes around the save path didn't help - the program says it's looking for the save path WITH QUOTES - which obviously doesn't exist (i.e. for "C:\..." instead of C:\...). This may also be the "typo" zami mentioned a few posts further up.

In my case the solution was to create a saves directory underneath the game folder (I don't like folders under the root C:\), i.e. C:\....\saves\ (where ... stands for my game folder name), and to change the savepath parameter accordingly (and without additional quotes).

I haven't tried to delete the savepath parameter entirely - never change a running system :-).

cnquist: Just in case anyone reads through all the fixes here and still can't get it working I just removed the savepath="Whateverpath" from the sword1.ini, thats what finally fixed it for me.

Anguy: Thanks a lot, fixed it for me as well!
Worked for me too! Thanks! P.S For me the quotation-marks didn't work, so for you out there with the same problem, try this instead :)
Greetings,

Thanks for the helpful posts. I found two solutions mentioned that worked. One was the following from greywolf1:

[i]"In my case the solution was to create a saves directory underneath the game folder (I don't like folders under the root C:\), i.e. C:\....\saves (where ... stands for my game folder name), and to change the savepath parameter accordingly (and without additional quotes).

The other was to delete the savepath line from sword1.ini. Note: there is no harm doing so ... it does not change the "running system" except that without the savepath the save file defaults (for me) in the \ScummVM\ subdirectory and whatever name you give the saved game in the gui, the default name it is saved under is "sword1.00*". So if you just delete the savepath line from .ini you can find where your game sends the saved game by doing a search for "sword1.0*". Cheers.
Thanks for that - changing the .ini file worked a treat on XP

Just one word of warning. If you edit it with Notepad all the contents will show up on a single line. But there is a special (probably return) character at the end of the default directory. If this is not part of the new location it won't work. You will get an error message pointing to a non-existent location. Just copy this character to the end of your new path & you should be good to go.

Or the quotation approach might be better still.
I am getting this same issue of the game crashing and going back to the Windows desktop and have tried all the suggested solutions but none of them worked. I am running it on Windows 7 (64 bit) and not XP or Vista, does anyone know if you can resolve this issue on Windows 7? (I only just noticed the requirements for the game do not mention Windows 7).

I was on Win7 64 when i posted that fix back in January, so that fix should work for you too.
Win7 64 bit here, I reinstalled the game to C:\sword, and savepath=C:\sword\saves and finally got it to work. A bit clunky but it really doesn't like the long pathnames with the default install directory.

irondog: Numur, unfortunately, I'm not very computer savvy. How do I find the sword1.ini file? I don't see it in the game file location.

Namur: The sword1.ini should be inside the game folder.

If you installed the game to the default location it should be :

C:\Program Files \GOG.com\Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars

or

C:\Program Files (x86) \GOG.com\Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars
I found the folder and tried the quotes thing. It brings up a save list. when I try to save it says the path does not exist. I am going to try and create a new folder like you did, Hopefully it works. I just tried the SAVES folder thing and that had the same problem.

Saving a game should not be this complicated.

You have to only create folder "Saves" in game dir and edit file sword.ini. For example:
Before:
savepath=E:\Gry\Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars

After:
savepath=E:\Gry\Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars\Saves

I noticed you quoted me a couple of days back but there was an edit in your post saying you had found the file, that's why i didn't reply sooner.

Anyway, if you're still having problems try this

-find the game shortcut on your dekstop, right click on it, choose properties, in the compatibility tab tick the checkbox for 'Run as Admin'
-create the 'saves' folder.(I created mine on C:\, so in my case the path to the folder is, c:\saves\)
-edit the .ini file and change the path to the folder you created in the step above (in my case, savepath=c:\saves\)

Go to the game folder. Find the file sword1.ini

Open that file with notepad. Find the line that starts with

savepath=

and change whatever it says there to

savepath=C:\SAVES\

assuming you created the SAVES folder on the root of C:
