hi, i just downloaded and started bs3.
it started fine but on the first screen it told me to select [ENTER], which I did....
but only flickering lines of the windows explorer windows beneath the game started flickering.
then I alt-tabbed out and back in and [ENTER] worked fine.
i went to graphics controls and changed my resolution to 1680x1050x32.
the game told me to restart.
now when I launch the game it crashes and sends a report to windows.
any thoughts ?
i could fix it by reinstalling but now I'm running the game on 800x600 and thought if somebody knows a fix for my problem ( or workaround just like in darkstar, where you have to edit your .ini to get the game running in 1680x1050)
thanks and good luck with your dl service. I love it + hope you can keep it up and running for eternity.

I might be wrong but it could be that you are trying to force the game to display its contents outside of its natice resolution. You mihgt want to check your options screen and see what other resolutions you get.

i try to choose the resolution over the ingame options screen.
it gives me numerous choices, 1680x1050x32 is one of them. So it's not me tweaking anything, I just try to change the resolution into something higher which seems to be supported by the game

Have you tried other resolutions?? Did it crash on only that resolution or did you see a similar result with other resolutions??
Please post your specs so we can see if this is a hardware issue. Might help others help you.

I'll do so once I'm at home. I'm gonna try all possible combinations and then re-edit this post.
thx, toni

I think the beta drivers may be the problem here. Try rolling back to the last stable or official release of Nvidia's drivers. I seem to recall that Nvidia's beta drivers are very much beta drivers in terms of stability problems and breaking things that weren't broken before.
I reinstalled and instead of reverting to the old drivers kept the beta.
it crashes again, i don't even get into the menue.
then I rolled back to the official drivers (which are of poor stability, I disagree with your views on nvidias beta drivers. you can't even play far cry 2 or gta4 with the official ones):
those driver make the game crash instantly as well.
so it seems that although I reinstalled the game it "memorized" its 1680x1050 settings.
like I said, starting with the default 800x600 resolution worked the first time.
i already searched my drive and registry where I can change the ingame settings but I couldn't find anything.

.

I have read on a site that you may set your desktop res down to 800x600 and then start the game. There were some ppl who this helped.
Mothra:
Your problem is most likely due to the X-Fi soundcard. I know I have one and the game constantly crash unless you do this:
1) Click Start->Run
2) in the dialog box type "dxdiag" (no quotes) then OK. This will launch the DirectX configuration tool
3) Go to the Sound tab you'll see a slider regarding hardware acceleration. Move this slider 2 notches on the left until you read "basic acceleration" instead of "Full acceleration" (do not turn off the acceleration completely since this would cut voice over within the game)
4) click "Quit" to close dxdiag.
Now the game shouldn't crash anymore. At least that's my solution to the crashing problem (and yeah, I'm running the GOG version of the game too).
Just remember to put back the sound acceleration to Full before playing other games otherwise you'll experience audio troubles in those other games.
If that's what Starfox wrote don't work please send you question to support.
I'm sure they will help you :)
thanks for the nice replies.
I am on the road and not able to check out changing desktop to 800x600 or lowering acceleration. But I did put up an support-question including my diax-file and a link to this thread.
- i will try those out this night/tomorrow and then update this thread and my support question with the findings. I'm sure it's only a temporary setback !!!

Just so you know, the settings are stored in the registry at HKLM/Software/Revolution/BSTSD/Video Not sure what the "flags" value is for, but resolution and refresh rate are stored as integers, so you can change them easily
hi, thanks for the help.
i removed the registry key as posted above and could reinstall and start the game in 800x600.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Revolution (i just deleted the whole folder)
now upon start it crashed again ;(
don't know how I managed to start it the first time, anyways, then I used Starfox's tip with
dxdiag->Sound->Acceleration->Basic
and now I can play even in my native 1680x1050 resolution.
another happy customer :)
hi. I am having problem with my version of BS3. I do not own the gog one but instead i have Broken Sword Trilogy (1-3)
Shadow of the templars and smoking mirror work without a glitch but I cannot run sleeping dragon.
when i turn on the game it hangs and nothing happens. result is shown on attached pictures.
I have set up basic sound, tried to play the game for the first time (after fresh install) at 800x600 (native is 1650x1080)
I had installed alcohol 52 so i could play command and conquer red alert without burning it on cds. I removed it thinking it may conflict with some weird copy protection system but nothing changed.
my specs:
amd 3200+
2GB of ram
ati 4850
xp 32bit
help?

Sorry to necro this, but I feel I should add to the lore - I was hit by the issue lukasz described, but found no solution. I'm on WinXP SP3, using an Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT (I think - Sapphire 9600 something-or-other, at any rate), and BS3 froze on the license screen ((c) 2003 etc.), before the main menu would display. Mucking about with sound acceleration did nothing, tweaking graphics driver settings did nothing either (well, I either got a blue frame around the frozen screen or not, depending on the AF-setting).
The solution for me was to run the game in Win98/ME-compatibility.
