I don't get it.
That's because as much as we'd all like to turn a blind eye to that fact, early LithTech engine sucked ass :(
I don't really understand why pennyarcade were so harsh on the game, or indeed why the poster madbrain stated all Lithtech engine games sucked.
Blood 2 and Shogo were both excellent games in their day, and Monoltih would have gone on to make more if it were not for the advent of the 360 and its wider market appeal
( Condemned, Fear ) etc.
Oh well. it would be a dull world if we ll had the same opinion I suppose.

Fortysixter: or indeed why the poster madbrain stated all Lithtech engine games sucked

Just re-read Fortysixer, I didn't write anything about games sucking. I consider them all good and nice, what sucked was the very early LithTech engine itself (Blood 2, KISS, never played Shogo though). It was mostly a pain in the ass to get a lithtech game to run decently. I believe penny-arcade too is basically complaining more about the engine than the game.
Apparently it was very buggy on release and it wasn't until quite some time later that it was playable. Back then bugs weren't to be tolerated. Now they're par for course.

I played Blood 2, KISS, and Shogo demos when they came out. KISS and Shogo demos were fun. Blood 2 was most definitely not. And it had nothing to do with performance.
Edit: Just looked it up, and KISS used the second edition of Lithtech, which is the same one used in AVP2.

Blood 2 was built on an early version of the Lithtech engine. A lot of the tools for it were pioneered on Blood 2, and it showed. The AI was pretty bad (despite the hype that it'd be good) and it just didn't play anywhere near as well as the original. I don't think the game was as bad as some people made it out to be, but when the game it's based on is an fps masterpiece, it needed to be a lot more than average, which sadly is all that it was.
It has nothing to do with the engine and everything to do with Blood 2 just being an extremely mediocre game in every possible respect. It wasn't "good for the time" either... in addition to being a big step down from the first game, it also came out in the same year as Unreal and Half-Life.
In all honesty, the only decent sequel Monolith ever made was No One Lives Forever 2. Tron 2.0 and AvP2 might count as well, but Monolith didn't make the originals so it was their first crack at both franchises. But Blood 2, FEAR 2, Condemned 2, all of 'em completely lost whatever appeal the original games had.
I agree with your other points sethsez, but the engine was a large part of Blood 2's problems. The AI wasn't just bad- things like basic path finding were broken. The engine also didn't scale well for lower end systems at all. If the computer couldn't keep up the framerate (which was common back then) people clipped through walls and the physics on the player (as well as items) stuttered like crazy.
also it just isn't a particularly good game
Well, you also have to consider the fact that it's Penny Arcade... Unfunny most of the times and still has millions of fans...

Its cause Penny Arcade is two guys who think they are funny and cool but they really arent. Most worthless garbage on the internet that panders to an insecure sub culture with obscure references so people will pay attention to their unfunny crap.

What does the Xbox have to do with FEAR, since it was a PC exclusive for a long time and was not planned for consoles in development.
And FEAR 2 was awesome, "consolized" or not.

I know it's your opinion and i agree about Blood 2,i can't tell nothing about Condemned 2 simple because i didn't played it, but can't agree on Fear 2, it was as good as the first one if not better imo, also i count AvP2 as the great sequel to the franchise, it was waaaaay better than the first one (the first one feel like they got a good idea but didn't know how to execute it well, though i loved skirmish ^_^)
I actually really enjoyed Condemned 2 and FEAR 2.
And Blood 2 was actually kinda fun.
