I recently bought the game Shadow Warrior through the 3D Realms website. The game looks like a lot of fun, but sadly it’s not working on my computer. I can play about five seconds of the first mission, and then the game crashes and I get a Dosbox error message. This surprised me because recently I’ve played other similar games like Redneck Rampage and Blood on my current computer. Blood played perfectly, except for the Cryptic Passage add-on. The same thing happened there. Any idea what’s causing this? I’m not computer savvy at all, so if you have any suggestions be sure to type them like you’re talking to an infant. I’m pretty dumb about these things. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The most common Cryptic passage error GoG users face has to do with file permissions because it needs to change a few of Blood's resource files. I'm not as familiar with SW but it might be a similar error. Have you tried running it as Administrator?
Thanks for the prompt reply! I think I saw another post (might have been one of yours!) recommending that. I didn't think that applied to me, but that could be it. I'll check it out, thanks again!

I'm just throwing ideas out her but....

When you say SW crashes on you after a short time, is that of actual game play or is it in the intro, perhaps where there is a cut-scene involved. (I don't remember SW having any, but it's been so long since I've played it)

I wonder if the -nodudes command switch works in SW, it might have some problems with a henchmen, you could try and run it without anyone to fight and see if it still crashes.

You could also maybe try another build of DOSBox. .74 is the current build, but there are SVN builds of a more current code base that might work better with it.
... or just play it on a source port. JonoF's Shadow Warrior Port should do nicely.
Or try ProAsm's SWP (which is a modified JonoF port, and so a little bit newer).

Oh wow, thanks for the links. I did not know about those. I've encountered yet another problem though. I hope I'm not being a nuisance; I'm an imbecile when it comes to this stuff. I keep getting a Tables.dat error. I looked it up on Google, and it really wasn't too helpful. Do you guys know how to fix it? Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

My guess is you are using JonoF's port (JFsw). I saw a post on 3D Realms forums - http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/archive/index.php/t-12842.html - that says you need to make SW.GRP and SW.RTS lowercase. No idea if this is true or if it works. But I do know that ProAsm's port only needs SW.GRP and I have that in uppercase and it works fine.

UPDATE:

Another forum entry elsewhere this time - http://forums.deathmask.net/viewtopic.php?t=618 - with a user who had the issue with both JFsw and SWP, and that was caused by SW.GRP not being in the right place for the port. In SWP it should be in the SWP root folder, alongside the SWP.exe.

Glad it worked out for you.

Now, if only Monolith and Atari could get together long enough to release the source for Blood....
