I'm having some graphical problems with Blood II. When I first started up the launcher and clicked the "Display" button it detected my graphics card just fine, and when I started a new game it ran smoothly but didn't display any part of the HUD. I tried switching through all the different rendering options in the game and got the HUD to display, but from then on the game began to move very slowly with an extremely choppy frame rate. Now whenever I click the launcher's "Display" button I get a message saying it can't find any renderers, and the frame rate continues to be very choppy. I've tried enabling all the different advanced graphical options but they don't seem to do anything. Compatibility mode hasn't worked either. Any idea how I might be able to fix this? (having this exact same problem with Shogo as well, so I imagine that a solution for one game will work with both of them)

My laptop's specs:

-AMD Dual-Core A4-4300M processor (2.5 GHz)
-Windows 8
-4GB RAM
-AMD Radeon HD 7420G graphics card

Open your installation directory and open the file autoexec.cfg and add in the entry maxfps=60. After you save and close, right-click on autoexe.cfg, select Properties and give it the Attribute: read-only; otherwise Blood II will just overwrite the file when it launches. If that doesn't work, try changing maxfps to 30, or some other value, perhaps based on your monitors refresh rate.

Just tried changing maxfps to a few different values and still no difference.

hmm, that generally does the trick.

Another thing to try is disabling your v-sync. Right-click your Catalyst Control Center icon in your system tray, select 1. AMD Radeon HD 7420G>3D Settings>Wait for vertical refresh>Always off

If that still doesn't work, you could try a few of the things Ali Ejaz suggested on the old PlanetBlood forums.

Alright Blood fans this is how to run Blood 2 with no problems at all on xp or other windows

Go into the your Blood 2 folder and click on the file called autoexec.cfg it will be a notepad file go into it and type anywhere on the left handside "MaxFps" "30"

Now if you don't wana type it in everytime you play blood 2 also do the same to the defaults file in the folder

now click on blood 2 and you know that box comes up with different options click on Advanced and tick these options
Disable directX 6 commands
Enable optimized Surfaces
Enable poly gap fixing (slower)
Enable triple buffering
and tick Always specify these command-line parameters just to be on the safe side but don't type anything in the command-Line box

Now turn on blood 2 and bring up the console by pressing ' after about a maximum of 5 seconds or more the screen should flash turn the console off and the menu doesn't flicker and blood 2 will be absoutely fine you have to do this everytime when you launch blood 2 you don't have to do it when you go on the next level i mean turning on the console but it's only for 2 seconds

Tried both of those and neither of them did anything.
Sorry, MasterInferno, I'm tapped at this point. If you do find a solution, please remember to post what ends up working.

I'm running a Radeon 6850 w/ latest 13.3 beta drivers, i5 3570k w/ 8gb RAM on Windows 8 and I've had the same problem. I can live with the frame rate being somewhat low, but when there are any lighting effects, such as the flare gun or a monster spawning in, the frames drop significantly down to ~3fps, making certain weapons all but worthless. The only "fix" I've found so far is to open the advanced options in the launcher and click "Disable light mapping." This makes the game look a bit worse, but lets face it, this game was never much of a looker even back in 1998. Never ran very well either, so I guess not much has changed.

Just tried disabling light mapping...this makes the cutscenes run smoothly, but the gameplay is way too choppy now for some reason. Tried changing the maxfps and tweaking the other advanced settings, but no change.

Regrettably this is the only advice I can offer. My game ran choppy but the frame rate stayed high enough that I was able to finish the game. I don't know if the issue is with Radeon video cards, Windows 8 or a combination of both, but the issue seems to have something to do with the lighting or how the HUD is rendered. I ran my game with no compatibility mode set, run as administrator, set affinity to a single CPU core, 1024x768 resolution and every option in the launcher's advanced options turned off except for disabling the light mapping.

The irony of this whole thing is that, when I saw Blood II was on sale I bought it because I finally wanted to see it running at a silky smooth 60+fps, something my poor PC in 1998 could never even hope to achieve. I guess the joke was on me, but I stuck with it anyway and finally beat the damn thing after 15 years, so yay me, I guess.

Three suggestions that are probably more time than they are worth.

1. Play it on an older computer.
2. Try playing it through an emulator. VirtualBox running an instance of XP is reported to have DirectX 8/9 capabilities.
3. Wine on Windows (because it's evil and will probably melt the brain even getting it to work)
Heya. Know I'm a little late to the party, but this worked beautifully for me:

Gonna bump this up because this worked for me too. He's got a newer version of the software as well.

Not a single version of dgvoodoo works for me with it's DDraw.dll and D3DImm.dll since Win7 and Win10 showing error when running and not possible to set video mode in launcher, but apparently https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat/releases/tag/v0.2.0b fixes game perfectly at the cost of SMK cutscenes (not that is any problem since game uses mostly in-game cutscenes)
