I've run into a bunch of issues trying to get the game to run properly. On starting it up, comparing this to the working game, where the Activision logo should be is a completely black screen, but you can still hear the dripping water, which seems to be an issue at least two other people here have had based on another thread. Then the game goes completely silent and only after pressing escape does it take me to the menu. The next issue is that the game has unresponsive controls, specifically to keyboard and mouse which is what I'm using. Trying to navigate the menu is a crapshoot because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If you manage to start the game, after the barkeeper's monologue, Kain immediately starts slashing repeatedly and unprovoked and I'm unable to move him, again, similar to someone else who has made a thread about this.

So I'm really curious, is there a fix for this? I figured that, since the game was on GOG that it was optimised for modern systems, but this seems to perform worse than the legacy version with all the community mods.
the issue is with DirectX 7.

a simple solution is to convert it to DX12.

I already have done so...tho my guide wont be available to public till Nexusmods staff approves of the game.
I have the same issues.
When I go to controls settings the game freezes.
I also tried Xbox 360 conrtoler wiith same result.
Sorry but it is no better than my physical copy of the game that I was last able to run it some 25 years ago on P5 machine.
I was so excited when I saw the game on GOG but I am not able to play it :(

I had to use Verok's wrapper and patch to get past this issue.
I had to manually install that by moving and deleting files though.
Just move/overwrite and delete dupe VAG files

So it is a waiting game for an official update

I really hope GOG fixes it, the whole point of owning the game on GOG is that you can play it, if I have to mod it, I could've done it with countless versions available online for free-ish.

Freaking this. I've had the original version with mods and stuff for a few years now, so I could've easily played that. I got it on GOG because I figured it'd be optimised already and that I'd own it in an official capacity.

actually the whole point in owning anything via GOG is to avoid having to use a cd/disc and to own it legally without having to go physically search for the disc in your local thrift store, basically easier access, or do a mass web search for it

its well known that not ALL GOG content is necessarely playable...a lot still requires mods to make sustainable.

I don't get it, why do you need to wait for some third party site's approval before a guide YOU wrote becomes available?

Why not just post the guide here for everyone's benefit?

I'm in the same boat. No video clips (just sound). escape a few times gets to menu, and when starting game I get to barkeep announcing its closing time, get stuck in a loop, can't move can't do anything (even ending task can sometimes be challenging...... I hope they patch this soon! (and bring out Soul Reaver to complete the collection).

*edit* I'm running on a laptop with dual GPU's (onboard Intel, and nvidia 2070q). Going into Start:Settings:System: Display: Graphics settings: adding kain.exe to list of games and hard set for "High Performance (nvidia)" everything worked perfectly.

The game runs under a wrapper to make it compatible with newer cards. If I am not wrong that wrapper use to read the calls to make the game run with dx11.

I'd recommend that if you own two videocards in your computer force it to run the game with the high performance one if it isn't done automatically.

Oher option is tweaking things into the dxcfg.exe configurator and try switching things like windowed of fullscreen or try different resolutions, scallngs etc...

The last option I think about is renam/delete the draw.dll file and use the external OpenGLwrapper from Verok's as an alternative. But for now has some glitches with the GOG version

Personally the game runs fine and smooth, FMV's included in my not very powerful Windows 10 x64 rig

Same here.
This version is worse than the original.

Works perfectly fine for me just straight out of the box, Windows 10 64 bit 21H1. Unsure why users like you are having issues but it's totally fine for me, apart from running a little slow, but I believe that's how the game originally ran on PC as it was locked to a lower frame rate for some reason.

yep. had the exact problem. i got the verok patch. comes as a zip file. throw it in your game folder, unzip it. click yes to all overwrites. Bam, game works flawlessly now.
