Why In Development?

“We have been working on Block’hood for one and a half years and it’s ready to be played by the community and those new to our project. The Plethora Project team hopes that InDev will give us the feedback from players to improve the game and also the time and resources to develop all the ambitious features we hope to have in the final version.”

Approximately how long will this game be In Development?

“Block'hood should be In Development for about six months with a targeted release in late summer or early fall of this year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the In Development version?

“The game will improve in performance and grow its number of available tiles. We are also planning to add many more challenge levels. We also are planning to add some key major modules that will improve the player experience;

-The terrain / terrain creation module: This module will allow the different terrains to interact with the blocks, allowing for a larger set of scenarios.

-The population module: This is the most ambitious feature as it will populate the corridors of Block’hood with simulated people. This will become the main achievement system of the game, allowing players to discover inhabitants by finding the right block combinations.”

What is the current state of the In development version?

“Block’hood is fully playable. We currently have 6 challenge levels, 8 tutorial levels and the sandbox. Players can expect many hours of replayability and sharing of creations.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We hope to involve the community by listening to the suggested features, ideas for new blocks, scenario and challenge modes and bug fixing. We also hope to increase the performance of the game to allow for much larger creations from the community. This creations will be key where Block’hood will go next.”

Thanks, this answered the one question I had, "where are the people?" (population module)
Awesome game! How do we get updates? (Just saw the dark UI update on Twitter, but when I downloaded it again from GOG, it appeared to be the same version - though I'd lost my achievements.)

You'll see them once they pass through GOG's sandglass of approval, usually within 24 hours of the developer submitting a patch here.

Hi Sarah,

We should be able to get this out for you on Monday. Sorry for the delay but we don't work weekends :)

Of course! Can't wait to see how the game develops. Speaking as someone who went to school for landscape architecture, I love how Block'hood takes on systems thinking.

Update:

We have JUST received the update 5 minutes ago at the time I write this post. Due to how late for Polish time we've received the update we'll make sure to roll this one out first thing in the morning. Sorry for the delay!

Aaaaand the update is now live. New offline installers are available and the update is alos going through Galaxy :)
Version 08.09 had been released for Steam on August 10th; the update was released for GOG users last night (but in my case, I couldn't get it until this morning, and I had to manually update the file).

Listed changes (paraphrased from the dev's post on Steam (and NOT copy/pasted):
Free orbital camera
Improved block collision
Better resource input/output hints by clicking on the resources
Turntable animation (?) - haven't launched the game yet.
Font size increased
Main menu contrast improvement (gamers heavily demanded this one; I thought that it was okay)
Removed white into animation (it WAS a bit much)
Fixed the delete bug
Regenerating decay of blocks instead of the decay/break functionality of previous versions*

*This last one I would like to discuss in a separate thread.

Here are my current findings derived from playing the latest version:

- The Recycling Plant now produces Plastic and Fabric instead of ominous Raw Materials.
- Retail Store has been replaced by a Corner Store which additionally produces Inorganic Waste.
- The Clinic now consumes Plastic instead of Fish and additionally produces Fitness.
- The Tech Factory now additionally consumes Plastic and additionally produces Devices.
- The Maker Space now additionally consumes Plastic.
- Several Blocks were renamed, mostly in the Organics category
- One of the Organics blocks was removed.
- The Plum Tree now additionally produces a bit of Fruit.
- The freshly renamed Oak Tree now additionally produces Acorns.
- The freshly renamed Beech Tree Grove which previously consumed Greenhouse Gas now produces Organic Waste instead.
-The Bamboo additionally consumes Greenhouse Gas.
- Various other previously more neglected types of Tree Blocks (due to not being used for challenges) now additionally consume Greenhouse Gas; most of them in quantities similar to the Acacia Tree.
- In general there seem to be more opportunities to produce Greenhouse Gas.

The free orbital camera means, that you now rotate your entire 'hood by dragging with your right mouse key. The previous fixed rotating of the 'hood by keyboard doesn't seem to work anymore and the keys are now moving the camera horizontally instead. I am under the impression, that due to this new free style perspective of the orbital camera it's occasionally more difficult to find the spots where new blocks are allowed to attach to existing blocks.

Any update on the ETA for the full release? Thinking of picking this up, but would like to know when it will be completed.

Only thing I can think of would be to check this twitter account occasionally: https://twitter.com/block_hood as we don't have an ETA atm.

Okay, thanks!
I gave up on the game and uninstalled it. The most recent update (08.09 as of this writing) is not only two updates behind the Steam version but also introduced a bug that causes environmental decay at alarming rates - mostly beyond normal gameplay. The developer was unresponsive to inquiries, plus throughout social media both he and the publisher are pushing/supporting the Steam version too far over DRM-free versions.

I loved the game, but the developer needs better community management control. For the past few months I've been waiting to play the game more than playing the game, mainly due to issues that the developer has been slow to resolve on the GOG platform.
