I owned this on the PS2. I would play it for a little while, become bored, and then forget about it for weeks. I'd eventually remember it and what stellar reviews it got, and try it again. Still boring.
None of the characters interested me, I found the art generic and uninteresting, the voice acting unremarkable, and (most of all) the gameplay boring. I can forgive much if the mechanics of gameplay are stimulating, but I could not have been more disappointed. I sold this back to Gamestop and never regretted it.
I've gotten the sense from many of the people who liked this game that a rebuttal to my review might be, "but you didn't play long enough to get to the good stuff!" Perhaps that's the case; I didn't finish the game. But I agree with Zero Punctuation: why can't the game be fun NOW?
Actually, Zero Punctuation praised Beyond Good and evil.
Besides, didn't the game OPEN with an action sequence?

One of the best game openings of all times, if you ask me. The music is great, especially during the slow-motion phase near the end of the first combat. Epic.

When I first got BGE I wasn't sure if I was gonna like it, but then the music started up and the slo-motion kicked in and I just knew then that I would love this game.
OP is entitled to his opinion of course, I can't stand Eastenders and yet people still watch it after all, but it doesn't take a while to get to 'the good stuff', if you like it the whole game is 'the good stuff'.

YMMV : First time I played I thought the first fights were so boring I immediately stopped playing. Only afterwards did I start again I started to like it (when you're out in the city).
If you don't like it - say - 10 minutes after you first exit the lighthouse, you will probably not like the game. Which I can understand perfectly.
