I have to say that Beyond Good & Evil is one of my favorite games of all time. It's got a strange yet beautiful world, a stunning, strong-willed protagonist and fantastic gameplay that blends stealth, combat and photography (!).
As green-lipstick-wearing Jade you get to investigate a strange conspiracy on the planet Hillys. People are being abudcted by an alien force known as the DomZ. The Alpha Sections claim to have come to protect Hillys but there's something strange about them - there's clearly more going on than meets the eye. So Jade joins up with a group called IRIS to investigate the mystery and uncover the truth behind the kidnappings.
As I said earlier, BG&E blends together a nice variety of gameplay styles and it actually manages to do everything quite well. What's upsetting about this is that the port to PC is a complete mess. If you can find this for a console you own, get it there. The PC version has numerous issues that may or may not crop up for you including poor sound quality, no controller suppourt and not even launching at all. If you want to brave these issues and try to make it work then you may be up for a fight. If you DO get it to work, however, this is a game you'll never forget.
Overall, Beyond Good & Evil is a five-out-of-five game.. but due to the horrendous port of this title I have to give the PC version a two. Beware.

The controls in my view are especially poor for the PC game. The game is fine enough, but the controls, the inventory system, the camera, the "have to be here to save" idea pulls down in the rating and can quickly turn this into a frustrating game to play
Indeed. It is a real shame that they did such a haphazard job on this game, as it was by far my favorite Xbox title.
I have played through the game three times and have absolutely zero problems with the controls. Then again, I rarely play console games so maybe it's just a matter of being use to playing almost all my games with a keyboard and mouse.
I managed just fine on my keyboard and mouse. I will have to say that the final battle is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than anything else in the game.
As far as the save points... I guess I figured I was playing a console port, so I should not count on saving whenever I wanted. By going in with this mindset, I was not uptight about saving and all was well.
The game is fantastic and I enjoyed it right to the end. Don't let the gripes listed above hold you back, this one is worth it.

I never play console games (unless ported to PC), which is why especially the camera and controls annoy me so much, when used to keyboard/mouse and flexibility in most titles.
Sure - some PC games also have the same stupidity with the camera, but this game is extreme.
Entire segments where suddenly the camera switches around as you run and thus you have to shift "run direction" because you run relative to the camera - plus you can't look around or anything seeing what comes up - it is stupidity in my book.

I know what you are talking about here. I'm having this problem in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time a lot.
"no controller support"
Really? So the 360 pad won't work?

Not out of the box but one of the other threads in here has suggestions for software to make it work. I think it was called xpadder or something, seems to map keyboard keys to controller inputs
While I wouldn't go so far as giving the game a 2/5, I agree that this is a very sloppy PC port. The controls are god awful, and if it weren't for the other highlights of the game, it wouldn't be worth my time.
But it is :)

I'd give a WORKING version of this game (console version) a five out of five, easily. Since this is riddled with bugs and I consider 3/5 to be "average" I really sort of have to give it a two or less. The issues are just impossible to ignore. I paid $10 for BG&E on Steam and can't even get it to START. I really should give it a 1/5 but it's just too good of a game (when it works) to rate so poorly.
Controls are quite hard indeed. Sometimes I was looking simply at floor without even seeing Jade's sexy face.
Especially the game in the bar was hard to control. Didn't get second pearl because it was simply too hard.
In anger i hit esc key with my fist and broke that plastic thing under a keyboard. To keep keyboard under an angle now I have to use eraser :)
last battle was hard but not that much. when you figured out the pattern no biggie. last punch cost me like four saves. I tried to attack the boss with superblast which failed to charge on time.
but i only had to dodge the attack and counter attack myself. simple and effective.

But have GOG fixed any/some/most of the problems? (though oviously not the camera). Cos rating the GOG release on the Steam release is only really fair if they are the same.
(i have no idea if the are, just wondering)
As FatalKitsune and Xandax say this is a horrendous port of the game to the PC because of the control and camera issues. I am about half way through the game and I have had some problems with the issues that others have had about the camera and controls. I have started to look for more pearls. The Alpha section areas are almost impossible because the camera will not work tin some areas. I can't see what is ahead. In some areas I spin around and get killed because of it. I am not certain I can finish the game, or that I wish to. The controls and the camera issues, and also the inventory system plus the "have to be here to save" idea has quickly turned this into a frustrating game. All these things make this game harder than some of the modern games I have played.
I just finished the game. The port indeed is sloppy, but aside from not-too-good controls I enjoyed it a lot. The game is not too difficult (e.g. when you die in a fight, you are returned to the beginning of the area, not the save point, so no problem here). Camera is unpredictable and difficult to control in some places, but the first person look helps in most situations. The bar minigame is pretty easy, just train a bit with mouse (keyboard control is very difficult).
As for gameplay bugs, I'm unable to get a photo of one creature (in slaughterhouses, releases bubbles). When I get it inside my field of view using first-person camera, it just vanishes and appears behind some boxes, where I can't see it. Did anyone manage to get it?
