At first the changes in text (compared to what was being spoke) was a bit jarring, but I do admit that the change in text has made it so much easier to understand. Is this part of some work on GoG's side, or is this done for localization.
I'm referring mainly for things like the Wrench (Referred to as Spanner in the manual), or the a can of WD-40 (Referred to as lubricant by voice.)

There's a bit where he says a machine is "frazzed" when the text says "Shagged" in big capital letters.

This is a bug that has been present in the game ever since it's release, being written by a British company it was originally intended to have British voice overs. They felt that the British sayings didn't quite work for Robert's American accent so they changed them, but didn't change the subtitles evidently.
There is a moment where he says "Sweater" but the subtitles clearly say "JUMPER".
It's a bug that will never be fixed unless someone bothers to do it, BASS is pretty much Open Source so it's possible and legal to do.

I meant to say I liked the change. It's good to hear that while it's a bug, it was original.
Really, seeing a can of WD-40 makes a lot more sense as a specific type of lubricant than just saying lubricant.

On the other hand, 'lubricant' is completely self-explanatory, whereas WD-40 is completely meaningless unless you've heard of it, and know what it is. So not such a bad thing to keep the more universally comprehensible version in the game, I say :)

Depending on how perverted you are, 'lubricant' could give you an entirely wrong idea on how to solve a puzzle...
Subtitles and voiceovers not matching are hardly a new thing though, it's been going on for as long as there's been subtitles. Watch a few DVDs with subtitles on and you'll realise that the dialogue particularly for fast speaking characters, tends to get condensed in the subtitles or there'd be a wall of text

Beneath a Steel Sky actually has a few different sets of subtitles. I don't know how easy it is to change the language setting in GOG's installation of the game (I don't run WIndows myself, so I can't test it), but you could edit the settings file, as described in an earlier post in another thread. In this case, you would add (or change, if it's already there) a line like this:
language=gb
The possible languages, for this particular game, are:
us - US English
de - German
fr - French
it - Italian
br - Portuguese
es - Spanish
se - Swedish
gb - British English
The voice-overs are not affected by this setting. British English are probably closest to them. I'm told the quality of the translations vary, and I know at least one scene reads completely differently with the US English subtitles. (A joke about someone saying "defecation" when he meant "defection" was rewritten in the US version. Really.)

It must using the British subtitles by default then. Good. I only brought it up because there used to be a bug in ScummVM, fixed long ago, that made it pick US subtitles by default, and of course there's still the option of selecting them manually.
I guess the US subtitles are a leftover from the floppy version (which, of course, didn't have voice-overs). Another leftover is the original intro to the game, which is much shorter (I believe a printed version of the comic book was included back then) but has some pretty nice music. You should still be able to get that by adding alt_intro=true to the configuration.

The comic book came with both versions. I have the boxed CD version, and it has the comic book too.
There are other differences between the text and the speech. There are a couple of phrases that they apparently simply forgot to record. The text is there, but there is no audio. Again, this is the way the game has always been.

It had? Darn, I guess someone must have removed it from the one I bought a couple of years ago. That's the risk of buying second-hand software, I guess.
Oh well, at least I have a nice scanned version of it now. :-)

from what I remember in the opening scene the beer label I saw said Fosters.
