I select Single Player, then Standard, then the game crashes to desktop. Happens in windowed and full screen.

My computer's specs are:

Geforce GTX 1080, driver version 440.97
i7-7700 3.6 GHz
32 gigabytes RAM
512 gigabyte SSD
Windows 10 Home, version 1903, OS build 18362.418
I'm having the same problem too. I get the feeling GOG players are being treated like second-rate customers with a gimped version of this game, as well as anyone wanting a DRM-free release seeing that Humble Bundle DRM-free Windows version was suddenly removed.

At least Beat Hazard 2, which I bought along with this one, is working fine for me. I just wish I could get the first one working as great as the sequel.

As someone who has the old CD version of Beat Hazard 1, I don't get how every new update gets released on other platforms (Steam, GOG, Humble, etc.) is in a busted state one way or another or lacking in features. The old CD version has working support for Xbox One controllers, the game runs stably, and doesn't give me problems with loading my own music library into it. If this was intended by the dev to deter piracy, well then, mission accomplished.
