If you're on GOG, chances are you're a big supporter of keeping games DRM free, and part of that includes the developers building bridges with the community, like CDPR has been really good at, Harebrained Schemes however, well prior to this they released a game called Necropolis, it's a decent, but simple game, basically a cartoony Dark Souls roguelike, they also made sure to advertise that it's "Death....With friends!" Yes, it has multiplayer, on Steam, and consoles, on GOG however, well for the past 19 Months we've been left with this outright lie
"Multiplayer notice: The GOG.com release currently supports single-player mode and offline functionality, with GOG Galaxy support for achievements & multiplayer coming in the near future. Stay tuned for updates from GOG.com and Harebrained Schemes."

I say a lie because for a while now, we know that they've halted all work on Necropolis to work on this game.
I was there before the launch of the GOG version, and we were only told shortly before release that this would be the case, I was naive at the time, and thought they were being honest when they said they were working on this. Don't make the same mistake as me, unless they specifically announce that multiplayer will work on GOG with no delays, just assume that they won't, and imo, don't support a company so unwilling to communicate with its customers.

Necropolis's page specifically states "Single Player" on the "Game Features" tags and does not say "Multiplayer" Where as on Battletech it says "Single Player" and "Multiplayer" on the 'Game Features" tags.

Also Necropolis does not talk about MP in the description, where as for Battletech does talk about the MP in the description.

So yeah, that is very much an announcement that Battletech is going to have MP for the GoG veresion when it releases.

That's not "very much an announcement" These developers are not your friends. The screenshots are what was stated on the store page before launch, up until the 21. of July 2016 when they quietly removed any mention of multiplayer, well after launch, nothing stops them from doing the exact same thing with this, because people let them do it, and GOG let them do it.

Full page screenshots.

It was corrected on the day of release, and people were able to get refunds
https://www.gog.com/forum/necropolis_brutal_edition/can_coop_with_steam_users/page1

They are also providing the MP servers themselves, which is also what they have been beta testing on. it is not going to be relying on GoG server or Steam servers for MP. They are also showing cross platform play on Steam as well.

This thread is about cross play between GOG and Steam users, at no point does HBS respond in this thread, or state anywhere else that they never intended for Necropolis on GOG to receive a multiplayer patch.

Furthermore, what HBS response there is in this thread is a twitter response of them clarifying how come there won't be cross play, and that honestly, seems to go against the idea that they are providing the MP servers themselves.

The BattleTech Beta was ONLY on Steam btw. To me that's the first warning sign.

Are you really going to put this on the consumers? They tell us outright that they're "working very hard on this" So if you happened to believe them and not refund the game, you were just screwed.
This company is not your friend.

If people bought the game after launch that did not advertise MP, only with "working on it", and the MP was important to them, then yes the consumer made a bad buying decision, cause they shouldn't buy something released that doesn't have everything they want it in yet.

Also I see nothing that shows the beta was only on Steam.

Also that thread proves that the problem with the page was corrected on day of launch.

The point is you are making to much of a deal out of 1 mistake, despite the fact that this company has made some excellent games. I doubt you can find any developer that hasn't made at least 1 mistake.

It was never truly corrected, at no point did they ever tell us that they weren't ever bringing multiplayer to the GOG version of this game.
It is misleading to say that you could get a refund when they didn't tell us that they weren't planning on ever making multiplayer available.
Why would you refund if you expect that it'll be added shortly after launch? That's what they claimed several times when asked!

I see now I was wrong about when they removed the tags, it still doesn't make it any better though, because they reassured us that it was coming. They Lied. It wasn't a mistake, it was a lie. I don't mind mistakes, but they claimed they had a problem implementing it, and then they straight up lied to our face, telling us that they were working on implementing the feature, in order to stop people from refunding the game. If they had come out and told us the truth, that they never intended for the GOG version to have multiplayer, yeah it would have been uncool, but at least I would have a proper choice, I was stupid enough to believe that they were being honest at the time.

Well here's picture of a backer on Facebook who mentions the fact that the BattleTech Beta was only on steam. It's not great as far as proof goes, but 1. Why would you lie about it? And 2. Show me one person who says otherwise.

Just because they couldn't get it done, doesn't mean they didn't try, obviously they ran into issues, and perhaps they were never able to get those issues figured out and they couldn't afford to keep on trying.

That facebook picture means nothing
Yes beta was only on steam, but it works like that. You run beta game, login to your battletech account and jump to loby find some games. Multiplayer was not linked to your Steam account.

Edit: and HBS told that multiplayer will be cross platform.

Clearly they ran into issues? Yet no issues on the Playstation Network, or Xbox Live, or Steam, but they were just too inexperienced to do it on GOG? Come on man, that's a terrible excuse, clearly they didn't want to, maybe they don't have faith in games being truly DRM free and fully featured..
They removed the description just after launch, and they just happen to not be able to implement it since, even though they claim they keep working on it, had no trouble porting it to other systems etc. They are lying, there's no and if's or buts about it, and any attempt to make an excuse is just desperate.

Well I don't think anything really stops them from launching a beta from GOG, but honestly if it wasn't for what they did with Necropolis, I wouldn't think twice about it, with HBS though, it becomes a warning sign because they kept telling us it was coming, despite them not working on it.

Till you can prove that they never worked on it and they deliberately lied, the only real logical conclusion is they tried and failed with GoG's system, and it was most likely costing them to much money to continue to try.

Next time learn to not buy games till all the features/fixes you want are in the game.
HBS produce very intersting games but despite releasing them all at gog they don't "believe" at the gog-theme.
I remember the first shadowrun, it was part of the kickstarter-marketing that they promised a drm-free release at gog, after the releasedate closed in they tried to change it to a DRm-only release but had to change to partiell drm-free release at gog because too many backers asked for refunds. But..DRM was only removed for the original release at first and DLC's/adons could be only bought at Steam if i remember right.

This and other stuff might be a sign that HBS believes in DRM and will support gog only as far as they have to..but thats only guessing. none of us kows the reasons.

But..."gamepolitics" aside, if they make a interesting game again i will buy it.

Edit:
Just read some old thread&articles...HBS stated they had been forced to change to drm because of the shadowrunlisence..might be..but hard to believe they didn't know it upfront.

on the fence with this one... i like the idea of battletech for multiplayer but
must have a joystick, single player (at least 20 hours) and must be gog... otherwise they can just stick it!

Can people who buy the game on GOG or Humble or Steam play multiplayer together?
We're platform agnostic. We don't care where you get the game - everyone can play together.

The Beta was only on Steam, yes... for every beta backer, no matter which platform you chose to get the final game on. There's nothing wrong or unreasonable about this.

No gamepad or joystick support according to the developers comments on their forum.
But, really... this isn't a mech sim. It's a turn based strategy, who plays them with a joystick ???

You can have 2 of 3 (SP at least 20 hours-it's a sandbox campaign- and GOG), but if you want a joystick then you are waiting for a Mechwarrior game. This is not, i'm afraid. Playing a turn-based game with a joystick must be really difficult, anyway xD
