I was trying a career in ironman mode. I ran into a mission that was too tough and decided to withdraw. Unfortunately the withdrawal area was in an inaccessible area that could not be reached.

Yeah I wouldn't play Ironman in this game if I were you - just play normal and use your own discipline (e.g. only reloading when something like the above happens - which it will, every now and then).
