Before I start a support ticket on this I wanted to ask if anyone else has this problem. Basically Incubation crashes after I press the "start campaign" button. It shows the space station rotating for a moment and then the game crashes.

Here is the crash report from Windows 7:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: Incubation.exe
Application Version: 1.0.0.1
Application Timestamp: 35069a0b
Fault Module Name: sound.dll
Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 4d303ddb
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00001342
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3

So it looks like "sound.dll" is the culprit.

Edit: There is already a support article just for that by the GOG team:
http://www.gog.com/en/support/battle_isle_platinum/incubation_crash_after_trying_to_start_a_game_on_windows_xp_sound_dll_
Currently reinstalling DirectX...

Edit2: Hmm, reinstalling DirectX didn't help. The game still crashes at that point. I will have to open a support ticket...

I am also having this problem

And it seems like the music doesn't play in the menu either

Sad :<
Same problem. I bought whole package for Incubation game :(
Hi guys!

I had a similar problem when getting the game and the motherboard integrated audio was the culprit. I disabled it and got a SB Audigy, updated the drivers and voila it worked.

Try updating the soundcard/motherboard drivers.

Cheers!
I'm seeing the same issue too.
Running against WIN 7 64 bit , all Graphics card/Sound drivers up to date but still it wont work.

So your solution is that we should buy a separate soundcard or did I understand something wrong here? What about people with Laptops? There are no more recent drivers for my device available (this is a VERY common problem with Laptops and thus with your customers), and I'm definitely not lugging around an external soundcard around for one game.

Besides, everything else works fine on my machine, so it's probably a specific problem how this game interfaces with DirectAudio/DirectX. Maybe the WINE project could help in this case? They have successfully developed wrappers for old DirectX versions.

I am also a bit disappointed that you apparently did not use a Glide Wrapper on this release, which would have improved the graphics quality substantially. I know you all work hard and are probably understaffed, but there seems to be so much more you could do to on these old games which would present them in the best possible quality to your customers.

I know it's not all that easy and will require knowledgeable people working for quite some time, but by combining the knowledge of the WINE project, the Openglide project and a few sources more (like for example the recent rewrite of DirectX for Wing Commander) I estimate you could make these Windows 95/98/early XP games games much more easily and more consistently compatible with modern operating systems. You really should invest more in this, since this is your bread and butter after all. It would also give you a tremendous boost over your competitors.

Thank you for your efforts. I have opened a support ticket yesterday and already got a reply, unfortunately none of the new suggestions worked so far. I hope this can be resolved eventually. :)

Okay, GOG support just solved the problem for me. It seems that a CD Drive is required, and my Laptop didn't have one. I installed a virtual drive and now the game works fine (so far).

Links to virtual drive software:
Daemon Tools Lite (GOG support recommended this):
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/downloads/dtLite

Virtual Clone Drive by Slysoft (I recommend this instead, because it is constantly updated, smaller and I trust the Slysoft team more than the Daemons Tools guys who seem a little more shady to me, but that's just my personal opinion):

So thanks a lot to GOG support!

Sorry about the trouble with the initial release. A temporary fix for this problem has been implemented in the updated installer we uploaded moments ago. The game shouldn't crash now, but you will need to have a CD/DVD drive (real or emulated) for the in-game music to play.
It may still crash if you have a CD/DVD containing only data (and not audio tracks), but we'll sort that out tomorrow, when everyone's back in the office.
For now I suggest waiting until tomorrow to download the new installer. :)
Hi, ive got a problem. I am using a mac with parallels and a windows 7 installation. I can get to the campaign but as soon as i select the first level when you get the briefing and i press to play nothing happens. It seems as the game is running but I only get a black screen. I have emulated a cd rom drive and all drivers are up to date. Is this because of the virtual machine?
Ah, it works now. Thanks. I was experiencing crashing issues, but I just took the DVD out of my drive and the crashing stopped.

Just like avist, taking the cd out of my drive fixed this problem for me ;)
