Some time ago, I installed mods following the 'essential mods' list (IIRC) some time ago, and everything worked fine. Today I decided to add the Tweak Pack, and also altered the widescreen mod to run in a lower resolution. When I started playing a new game, I found that some of the NPCs in the Candlekeep Inn (and possibly elsewhere: it's a new game, and I haven't had a chance to explore yet) have strange names. The nobleman downstairs is apparently known as 'I care not. Leave me be', and the one upstairs is equally wrong, so it looks like it's loading the wrong lines. I tried reinstalling the Tweak Pack, and then when that didn't work I tried uninstalling all the components, but I'm still having the issue. Does anyone know what might be causing it?

You have installed mods in a manner that has caused conflicts, meaning that the references in dialog.tlk have been corrupted, or 'misplaced'. Hopefully you made a clean backup folder, because you will need to start your mod installations from fresh -- dialog.tlk must be replaced as new -- and follow a sensible mod install order; do not install mods randomly, and take note of mods that are compatible/incompatible. You must also make sure that your BG1 installation contains no mods, fixes or tweaks of any kind if you are installing BGT. Do not reload a saved game containing refs. to the corrupt dialog.tlk. Start a new game.

I was following these instructions.I essentially followed through that list, changed the widescreen mod's resolution, then added the tweaks pack later on. I can't actually view that page right now for various reasons (although I'll be able to in a few hours), so I'm not sure if I put the tweaks pack in too late. If I did, would this be the cause of the issues? And if not, what would be? As I say, until I installed the tweaks, everything was working fine and I'd been playing another successful game. Are there any specific tweaks which are likely to have caused issues (other than the beta ones, which I didn't install)?

Due to lack of spare memory at the time, I didn't make a backup folder, but as it happens I have the games on disk (possibly from before GOG started, in fact), so reinstalling the game shouldn't be too hard if I need to.

Will it be safe to import my character from the corrupt game once I'm done reinstalling, or should I cheat the stats to his levels and recreate him from scratch?

Hickory has already answered this question but Yes this will cause you issues every time… mod order is an exact science and widescreen MUST always be last.

Yes there are issues with every mod and now days the good mods all list their issues on the webpage or in the readme.

Gog game = don't patch but the old disc version = do patch.

Yes you can safely import characters as long as the save file they came from will load without crashing the game… even if the dialog talk in that save game is corrupt.

ussnorway: Gog game = don't patch but the old disc version = do patch.
So to clarify, I need to uninstall everything (other than save games), then reinstall from disk, patch both games, and then follow the install order given?

Thanks!

Yes.
