...in the tutorial. Be kind, this is my first time trying this type of game. So I firgured I would start with the tutorial and I was going grreat..till it came time to memeorize a spell. What does the scroll look like that I'm supposed to right click on and what is the history page where I'm suppsed to learn it? I beat FO New Vegas and I'm stuck 30 seconds into a 10 year old game..sigh...

First click your portrait or toon on map to select your char, then click spellbook icon on left of screen. Then just click on those spells you want. Finally rest to memorize them.

Spellcasters are very weak in their first levels, so dont expect them to be that useful until level 3 and up. Save alot and NEVER walk point with them as you probably already have learned by now hehe.. Good luck!

As soon as your party reaches level 3 and up you will be heavily rewarded with items and skills so dont give up to early!! :-)

In BG series, you learn spells while sleeping, then you can use them one time until refreshing them by sleeping again.

Do not be discouraged by not understanding how spells worked. I never understood spell memorization in BG games until I'd been playing off and on for years, and then finally got basic D&D education.

Spells work like thus:

You have a pool of spells the caster knows innately or has been taught through scrolls. You go to the relevant magic section (Different sections for Mages & Clerics) and you'll have the spell pool on the right. On the left are your slots. You click a spell in the pool to add it to a slot. The spell will be greyed out.

What that means, is the mage is learning how to cast that spell, but requires eight hours rest to have access to the spell. So you need to go rest at an inn or sleep outdoors for eight hours. Once awoken, click the spell toggle button, and you'll have a list of spells available for casting.

One memorized spell slot corresponds to one casting of that spell. So at Level 1 mage, you'll only have a grand total of one or two spells to cast per eight hour rest.

This sort of magic style is called Vancian Magic, after Jack Vance, a fantasy novelist. Gygax borrowed the idea for D&D in the beginning, and it's been with it ever since. The distinction between "known" spells that are in your spellbook, and "memorized" spells that are available for casting, has confused many people over the years. When most people think of magic, they think of something like a witches' ritual, or some Jedi-style power that's always available. D&D doesn't work like that.

It actually ends up making a lot of sense once you're used to it, but at first it can be a stumbling block.

Starting to get it, Biggest issue was realizing the scrolls are in inventory. As I said, new at this. Finished the tutorial, just starting out.....my guess is I'll be back here.

Feel free to ask anything you need help with. The game has a steep learning curve, but you'll get there.

If one in your party dies, are thy dead forever?

If the portrait of the party member turns grey you can pay to have them brought back to life. if their portrait is removed they dead for good. I think this can be turned off in settings but it's been a while since I played the game unmodded.

Thanks guys, getting the basics down I think. At this point I hate having a memeber die so I just go back to a save.....some things never change, save early, save often.

And you might wanna pick up the equipment the dead companion dropped, as with game I am playing; they don't come up automatically if you raise your dead companion in a temple.
