When I launch Baldur's gate 3, with DirectX:

- The screen goes black, with an error message "Input not supported"
- I am unable to do anything except restart the computer.

If I choose Vulkan the game crashes.

Now I know that this means that my screen cannot handle the screen resolution. Is there any way to force the game to use a lower resolution, without launching the game first?
change your screen resolution to 1024X768 before starting the game
also are you using some sort of controller?

I tried setting different screen resolutions, 1024x768 and others. Same results: input not supported.
I don't think I am using a controller, although I am not sure what you mean or how I can check this.

a joystick or xbox i.e, an input device used with video games or entertainment systems
yes = unplug it... the game does not allow for these yet

edit; try this work around see image

1. open Galaxy but don't fire up the bg3 launcher
2. open bg3_dx11.exe from the bin folder where the game is installed... note this is the dx11

what you should see is something like the image where the game launches but you still have a Windows task bar... the task bar should disappear after the game finishes loading

assuming that works then the issue is your display type and what you will need to do next is go into your GPU options and set the game to run in "Fake full screen" [save settings] \ quit the game and you can now load it back up using the normal launcher next time

Ok, I'm not using any joystick or xbox or anything like that.

Some additional info: I have a ProLite x2474HS monitor and my graphics card is an Intel 4600.
My screen normally has a resolution of 1280x720 and the game also tries to start in this mode.
I checked DirectX too, I have version 12 installed.

Opening the bg3_dx11.exe directly unfortunately doesn't help, I am still getting "input not supported".
I tried changing the following compatibility settings:
- run as administrator
- disable display scaling on high DPI settings
- run in Windows 8 compatibility mode (even though I'm running windows 10)
But none of that helped.

Pressing alt-enter after the game started does nothing.

One thing I noticed: after the game started I can alt-tab out of it and see the taskbar. Then I even get a working preview of the game window when I hover my mouse over the game icon on the taskbar. But so far I did not find any way to click anywhere or change the game settings. :-(

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

I don't see a Intel 4600 pushing this brick up hill mate... even my shitty old GF840m struggles

yes the specs are hard locked and can only be changed after you get the game running... even then half the options like [show \ hide] tutorials don't actually get read by the engine

grobblewobble: my graphics card is an Intel 4600.
The minimum system requirements on the BG3 store page show a GTX-780
This page compares a GTX-780 with an Intel 4600

You are never going to be able to play the game with that GPU.

Why do people PERSIST in trying to play AAA-quality computer games on POTATO-POWERED computers???

I've had TOASTERS with more powerful graphics than an Intel 4600, FFS.

Buy an actual GPU. You're using integrated graphics that wasn't good when it came out.

It actually runs on 540M (2GB version), so it can run on old graphic cards, and apparently this one is a little bit behind that Intel one according to your site. I do have i5-2430 and 12GB RAM though, and without the RAM I'm not sure if I could run the game, since whenever I had Firefox on (which was taking up several GB of RAM), the game would always crash after trying to load the game. You just can't run the game with shadows if you don't want any stuttering/lag (and pretty much everything off), and just like D:OS, it hurts to look at the game on a sixteen inch laptop (720p) due to tiny items and texts.

Where did you get the toaster? I'll have you know, if you don't want to play newer games, 2010 AAA games run on such GPUs just fine! ;) On a funny note, the game actually runs on my 540M! Unbelievable. But it hurts my eyes due to the text/game size (but it was the same with D:OS), so I'm thinking of waiting until the game gets a full release and I can get it on Stadia, since every loading screen takes a minute, making re-rolling and other loading harder.
