I thought Larian tweeted that regional pricing was in effect for BG3, not to be rude or say its not worth it but $90 AUD is a pretty big sum especially when any AAA game in stores here is $70

the shopping cart server collapsed so I couldn't buy, then came to GOG and it was priced at 36 USD for Chile.

Please consider we are a LOT poorer in Chile. xD

Its .. not ideal for Australians, yeah. If Cyberpunk or The Avengers is any indication, the price for a AAA title can vary from 79 to 100 AUD.

I think a contributing factor GST, but even then I dunno how much of it reflects the asking price.

Well, it is 59,99€ here in Germany. Equals 70,39 US$ right now (06. October 2020).

The issue isn't that we see "nextgen" prices for a "nextgen" game. The issue is that we don't get much for it.

Normally a full price preorder is much more expensive than "some cheap key at the day of the release" or picking up a box from a distributor if you can, etc. And buying stuff this early always comes with the risk. But a lot of publishers reward early adopters with some in-game rewards, etc. here they offer nothing. Okay, maybe we can see the middle finger for the publisher gloating how they can demand nextgen console prices even here on GOG.

Yes, BG1 and BG2 are two legendary games. But BG3 has a new ruleset, new engine, new developer, new writers, lots of changes to setting (retcons from some edition), very different art style, so they have just bought hype with the name. They didn't believe we would buy the game for these prices on its own merits, so they use a "borrowed" fame to sell it.

And we aren't in the PS5 store, we are on GOG, most people there enjoy old classics, indie games, etc. From the same $71.40 we can buy several copies of old classics like Neverwinter Nights and play with friends. Why do I mention Neverwinter Nights? Because in that game different adventures tend to be really different, if you want that. With BG3 even if you want different adventures, different stories at each playthrough, it won't be THAT fresh.

There are much better games in the GOG store at much lower prices.

Actually, it's because the price in Euro is being converted to US Dollar (59.99€ = $70.40; why is it priced $71.40? For good measure?!). Most if not all EU/Europian countries are charged in Euro whether they use it or not.

All EU countries required to advertise the full price after paying VAT, while in the USA they can specify a price before taxes. That is why the regional price for Europe is higher. And they make sure that the regional price should make sense in countries with high VAT, as usually, these high VAT countries have lots of sales.

Why? Labor is cheaper here, real estate too. So companies that purchase a lot of boxed copies to sell activation keys online often work from these areas and they often try hard to avoid as much taxes as possible, this is how "key shops" work. So when they determined the regional price for the EU, it was probably based on their need to stay profitable even if keyshops buy and resell a lot of copies in V4 countries.

So physical sales in high tax countries should be profitable and that has a huge influence on regional pricing. As we are in the EU they can't make a "V4 countries" regional version which cannot be activated elsewhere. We drive the EU prices up... And the EUR price would be converted to various currencies later.
