Seems like Druids in BGEE/2 have a lot of potential but are heavily underpowered due to their lack of access to Cleric spells and their VERY slow level progression.

Are there any mods out there that make Druids hold a candle to the better classes like Clerics, Mages, Fighters?

BG tweaks does that - both for BGEE and BG2EE (and IWD).

Look for unnerfed spell progression tables, shapeshifting rebalance, changed equipment restrictions and alingment restrictions. Plenty of other tweaks there too - for the whole game, not only 1 class. I actually can't play those games without it :)

a well played Druid holds their own in the lower levels but yes they are outclassed if you solo play because they are older and not designed to reach higher levels

my personal mod added Beholder shapeshift with an antimagic 'spit' attack and she managed to get all the way to Tob on no-reload as my test run

i wouldn't say Druid needs buffing unless you play solo and most mods for BG2 have major issues with the fact shapeshifting can be dispelled... leaving you unarmed because the game engine is designed to give you magic gloves when you shapeshift
