Trying to setup a min/max build for the "ultimate" Dwarf Fighter/Cleric, not sure about the start stats if I plan to give him all the +stat tomes I come across. I know there are +1 to all stats except Wisdom, which gets 3 +1's. Does that mean Wisdom can be set lower, or would that penalize the later Cleric abilities especially after I transfer to BG2 and get the high end Cleric spells. As I understand it you need 12-14 Int to avoid being fodder for Intelligence drain enemies in BG2. Also it seems that the only Charisma ever taken into consideration when dealing with npc's is yours so I should like to not lower that too much either. I've switched to higher Charisma characters to deal with npc's but it never changes their reactions from what I can tell

You'll want STR 18, DEX 17, CON 19, and WIS 18 for sure. You get more bonus cleric spells as your WIS increases, so higher WIS is always better. INT can be 11, and CHA can be whatever you like. With 21 WIS vs 18 WIS, you'll have an extra spell for 1st-5th level, so it's DEFINITELY worth maxing out WIS. Although you won't get as much benefit from 19 CON as a straight fighter would get, once you get to 20 you'll start regenerating (albeit very slowly).

CHA is not really relevant except for determining shop prices and the occasional (relatively rare) dialog option, and you can move another higher-CHA character to the first party slot for any necessary dialog. At the beginning of BG2, you'll get a ring that boosts your CHA to 18, so it becomes even less relevant in that game. It is a safe dump stat.
Don't worry too much about int drain, it's only one monster type in BG2 and they need to roll a natural 20 (only 5% chance) to hit a well equipped character, 6 int will allow you to survive one hit, 11 int two hits but even with 3 int they still have to hit you.

It's definitely worth maxing str, dex, con and wis, if you have a perfect roll 16 cha would be nice but you can simply make another party member your party leader.
I agree to everything said before.

- Max out str (18/xx), dex (17), con (19) and wis (18). If you play with a mod that allows to play bg1 with the bg2 rules, a half-orc would be better str 19, dex 18, con 19, wis 18.
- Do not care about charisma. Put somebody with high cha as leader when talking to somebody (like Imoen in BG1).
- Do not care about int. There are not many mind flayers in the game, they need to hit you and you can use another char as tank. My advice: Use somebody with high AC and immunity to mind affecting things to kite them and let the others attac with ranged weapons.
- A ranger/cleric is better than a fighter/cleric. You loose nothing but you gain all druid spells and 2 point in two-weapon -fighting in BG2. It must be a good half-elf.
Thanks all much appreciated, this gives me a good start point although tbh I was expecting Int and Cha to be more necessary than that.

I've read about how OP Ranger/Clerics are and while they do sound fun, I fully expect to be focusing on Warhammer + Shield, just feels right for a Battle Cleric setup. As for the Orc vs Dwarf I agree that having a potential 20 Str 19 Dex and 20 Con (after + tomes) would be incredibly powerful especially for this build, I just don't know any safe free sites that carry that mod.
If you have a link I would be interested, no Fileplanet though please. Know too many people who had their machines attacked by game mods from there due to viruses hidden in the game files

Get either one from their respective home pages:

Easy TuTu

Baldur's Gate Trilogy (BGT)

Be advised that to install BGT you MUST have a completely virgin installation of BG1 -- no fix packs, no mods, no exceptions.
If you're not familiar with the different between Tutu and BGT, the main difference is that Tutu just lets you play BG1 using BG2's engine, and nothing else. BGT combines BG1 and 2 into one long game, moving you on to BG2 automatically as you finish BG1 (with a small bit of dialogue to improve the continuity). If I remember correctly, it also automatically keeps the statistics of anyone in your party at the end of BG1 who appears in BG2, rather than using the BG2 defaults.
Dwarf isn't much worse than Half-Orc. Dwarves get a big racial bonus to the important saving throws and there's also a very good weapon only dwarves can use in BG2.
