Hey, I ran a quick search of this forum and couldn't find anything like my problem, hopefully I didn't overlook a simple answer.

I bought BG2 off GOG roughly five days ago and I've been playing a bunch since. However, today I got home to find that my computer had automatically rebooted for system updates, and when I opened up BG2 it treated me like I had just installed it and my saves are all missing.

I checked in all the folders I can think of and see the mods that I installed, so at least I know that I'm not hallucinating the past few days. Shadowkeeper doesn't see any saved files to edit, either.

Random glitch, or am I doing it wrong? Any way to get my saves back? Any way to make sure this doesn't happen again? Thanks in advance!

Is your game installed to default location? (Program Files)
If so, did you check there: C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\GOG.com\<game_folder>

Assuming I'm in the same folder as you are, I'm on Windows 7 and the route to program files/GoG.com/BG2 is different.

The game's there, but the saves are not. I can still play the game, and the mods are working, I just have nothing to load.

Forgive a noob here, but I can't find that path. There's no "AppData" folder to follow under my user name.

It's probably hidden.
Click on 'Organize' in top-left corner in Windows Explorer, then 'Folder and search options'
Go to 'View' tab and under advanced settings pick 'Show hidden files'
Apply, refresh the view and now you should see AppData.

Yes, it was hidden, thanks for showing me how to un-hide it! I opened the folder and only found small, 0-2 KB files. One was an "ERR" file, which I'm not familiar with, two are logs of configuration changes, and one is a blank text document. Am I screwed?

You rock, I found them. They were under the "Temp" user rather than me, for some reason.

So, is it as simple as a copy+paste to put them where they need to be, or is there a better way to load these saves?

Copied the files over to a save folder within the game folder under my user name, and I can now access and play them. I hope they'll stay in the right spot now, though I now know where to look if they don't.

Saves should stay in the game folder if you ran BG2 as an administrator. (right-click on the game shortcut, pick that option).

In the future, to avoid such problems, you can simply install a game anywhere outside Program Files folder.

You were right the save games I was looking for have been found in my appdata, virtual store, GOG area of my files thanks dude. (:
