But then as an end to BG2, there is a cutscene where Irenicus is being attacked by demons on this fiery realm. How is he still alive? Is this a hint to some kind of infinite death loop, a new horrorable plane every time he is killed? What is going on in this cutscene?

Hickory: It's a Bhaal thing. Irenicus didn't die in Suldanesselar, not really, since he still had part of Bhaal's (your) essence, same as you and Imoen. There is no permanent death for any who do until it is utterly removed. This is explained at the conclusion of Throne of Bhaal.
