LOL! So I'm in the Ulcaster Ruins, seeking to destroy the lair of undead wolves (and get the tomes the ghost of Ulcaster seeks), when all of a sudden my game crashed and I found myself back at my desktop.

My game began crashing at the first room with the two dire wolves. I've since moved my party to the 2nd room with two dire wolves, saved, but my game keeps crashing.

I thought it had something to do with the wolves respawning once you leave the room, but whenever my game crashes and I'm back at my desktop, a box appears in the middle of the screen, saying this:

ASSERTION
(red circle with an "X" in it) An Assertion failed in D:\Dev\Baldur\CPathSearch.cpp at line number 724 (and then a prompt button to click "OK").

This is a problem because I'm using my GoG copy, yet the Assertion error talks about my D:\ Drive, which is my DVD/CD drive.

Can someone please take the time to help who knows what this problem may be? My OS is WindowsXP, if that's any help.

Please help b/c this area is so much freakin fun, being surrounded by undead wolves!

You could try deleting all the files in the games /TEMP and /CACHE folders.

You could also try editing the BALDUR.INI file as suggested in this post

Uninstalling and reinstalling the game, after making a backup of the saves, can sometimes solve various Assertion problems.

Unfortunalely, it could also mean you have a corrupt save

I believe I've discovered what may be the problem for all ASSERTION errors regarding BG1.

My PC has an Armor spell on him, it lasts for 8hrs, and at the time of my save, I was in the 8th hour of the spell (thus its about to wear off), and my party is in an area of respawning undead wolves, dire wolves, and spiders.

Perhaps the combination of those things is too much for the game engine to handle at once, thus some incombatability arises between the temp foler, baldur.ini file and such. I'm not an Infinity Engine expert, so I guess its simply a theory of mine.

N'v't'less, thanks for the help. I tried everything, and nothing worked so its probably a corrupt save. No matter. I'll juss restart from where I was 3 gm hours ago. My party has already killed the wraith in an even more impressive fashion than before! Ha!

There are suggestions that the save can become corrupted if any sort of script is running when the save is made.
Is the Armor spell being employed considered a 'script,' or the Armor spell's duration about to be finished considered the 'script?'

I assume the armor should be ok, but things such as NPCs making speeches would likely count - not sure about spawning beasties
Gotcha. Thanks mate!
