How does the Freedom spell work?
The Demi-Lich in Watchers Keep Imprisoned Mazzy.
Imoen cast Freedom & Mazzy returned,
BUT she isn't on my team & if I try to reinlist her, I get "Mazzy has nothing to say to you" Making it pointless to free her.

it should work so seems like its bugging for some reason, either reload and try fighting again without getting imprisoned or use a cheat to make Mazzy rejoin your party.

1) edit baldur.ini and under program options add "Debug Mode=1" without the quotation marks
2) press CTRL+space
3) in the box on bottom of the screen type CLUAConsole:EnableCheatKeys() (you can copy/paste this so no need to type it in manually)
4) press CTRL+space again
5) cursor over Mazzy and press CTRL+Q and she should be added to your party

Thanks Maurizio84, I had a save not long before the fight, so I just redid it keepng Mazzy invisable.
It seems from searching the net that they usually need to rejoin after Freedom, but they are meant to talk to you. Others have had this "bug"
Apparently using the Ctrl-Q method cuts all future conversation with that NPC.

i see, well it's nothing new that when you "fix" one thing, something else brakes, lol

anyways imo best safeguard is to save a lot and not just quick saves but hard saves too, sometimes it's just easier to replay something rather than start messing around with cheats/editors.
