I can't find the baldur.ini file to change the script so you can create items. Does anyone know where to find it on my computer. Im using Windows 7 64-bit.

Likely in the Virtual Store :

C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\program name

You may need to enable 'show hidden files'

Um.. I am pretty sure it is in the installation directory. If you are talking the GOG.com version it can usually be found in C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Baldur.ini .

This is true for both BG1 and BG2.

Baldur.ini *is* located in the main game directory. However, if you installed to any "\Program Files" directory, your efforts to change it will prove futile in any Windows later than XP. Windows will "protect" most of the files by replacing altered ones with backups it maintains from the original install or official update. This is a common complaint in the Infinity Engine modding community, and appears frequently in their forums.

You will see one copy of the Baldurs.ini under your installation directory. You can't directly edit it, though there are ways to change the content if you have admin right.

But it doesn't matter, because the game does NOT read from that file.

I repeat, the game doesn't care what you do to that baldurs.ini under the installation directory. It doesn't load it at all.


Like Kezardin said, you want to look at

C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\program name

and edit the baldurs.ini found there.

The game will read from the file if replaced by a non read-only life.

Sounds like the \LocalVirtualStore\ location is where newer Windows versions stores the protection copies when installing to \Program Files\ subdirectories. As a modder and a mod tester I regularly modify the Baldur.ini file, a necessity for finding many errors that occur. My previous comment still stands. And as notredatall stated, make sure the file is not "read only" or nothing you do will change it.

So I think I have a different problem. I've installed BG1 from GOG in the default location via GOG Galaxy on Windows 7 64-bit. The thing is, I have nothing in my VirtualStore folder. So I have only the one baldur.ini. I did find an alternate one in C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\support\1207658886\1207658886\app and I changed that one as well. But even when I installed BG1 without Galaxy in the default directory, I still had an empty VirtualStore. I also tried installing to a custom directory, but changing the .ini did nothing there as well. Any ideas as to what could be happening?

i am using the enhanced version in windows 10. & i have looked all through the bg directory & even done a search to no avail. however, i did find a baldur.lua configuration file.

is this the replacement for baldur.ini in the enhanced version? & if so, first, does anyone know where the debug access lines should go in it? Secondly, someone said that the new configuration file is a read only file. if this is the case, we are out of luck.

I can't find Baldur.ini on my mac updated for El Capitan. Searched the whole mac. Is it under a different name?

Just to check: You *are* playing the classic edition, correct?

If you are playing the Enhanced Edition, then the file no longer exists; the file's functions are now provided by a new file called baldur.lua, which I believe is a Lua script.
