So, here's my question; I want to enter the Sphere, but I don't want Valygar in my party, and I don't want to kill him. Is it possible to enter the sphere without doing one or the other?

(No mathematician's answers, please.)

Yes, but you need Valygar in your party briefly - once the door is open it will stay open.
So meet Valygar and get him to go to Athkatla, meet him in his house and have him join the party (leaving another NPC there for now) - go and open the sphere (don't enter) and then go back to drop Valygar and pick up your other NPC. (this assumes you have a full party - if not then it's easier to just drop Valygar at the sphere and go on in)

That's what I was thinking I'd have to do; I just didn't want to metagame like that. Thanks!

He said that I only need him in my party to open the Sphere, not enter it.

Well can I ask why you didn't just kill him?
He is very easy to kill if you go in to his house with a few friends.
Or did you want to take him on other quests later in the game?

I just didn't wanna kill him. I like the guy, and Minsc would get miffed if I did. And I think we all know what happens when Minsc gets miffed....

On a side note, Trollum's idea worked.

Oh I know it works, I've done it myself in the past.
But from a roleplaying point of view, if you don't want to keep Valygar in your party, you are better off just killing him. He is a wanted killer so you lose no rep for it.
But then I never have Minsc in my party so I didn't realise he objected.
