The doorway transitions between areas in this game (Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition) are just terrible. At first it was a minor annoyance that didn't cause much of a problem, but as I am trying to do the Tremain's Son sidequest right now I'm trying to do something as simple as going through the doorway to the guy's house to bring the item he requested back to him and I've tried clicking on the doorway like 100 times now and my party just clumps around the door and does not go through. It's really pretty frustrating and stupid how poorly this aspect of the game functions.

Out of all the other game's I've played, I've never experienced doorway transitions in an RPG that are this bad and immersion-wrecking before. Overall the game isn't bad and MOST OF THE TIME this doesn't cause a problem with enjoying the game, but it deserves some angry reviews for this because for some reason certain doors in the game give you a lot more trouble than others.

Is this a problem with the Enhanced Edition, or was the original game this way as well?

(Unless there's a bug I haven't heard about) It takes 2 clicks to pass through a closed door. One to open the door, one to transition. The second click can be complicated by the open door, which is right there and happy to close if you click it. Also, if you let your party crowd up against that area then there are lots of non-transition things to click on.

I don't find it difficult at all to get through in 2 or 3 clicks, but then I've been doing it for decades. So maybe I'm just used to it.

99% of the time that's my experience as well but some doors in particular just don't seem to work so well. It's an irregular occurrence, but certain specific doors are problematic.

I even had them backtrack like 30 feet away from the door and approach it over and over again with a fresh approach. Time after time, they don't go through.

Eventually I got them to go through that particular door, but this feature of the game was poorly designed. You shouldn't need to do such things just to go through a doorway in an RPG. Most other doors in the game don't have this problem. I think there was 1 other door so far in this playthrough that gave me similar issues, albeit not as bad.

But honestly that's 2 doorways too many...

1. First select your group and click "stop". It's the X button on your toolbar. F3 also works

2. Send them back a little bit.

3. Without clicking on the door, move them towards it. Wait until they get in formation and stop moving.

4. Click on the door again to exit.

You don't have to do this for every transition, just when they clump together and get stuck like that.

I played recently and also encountered the same problem. For me it was the zombie farm (AR0400) and the fisherman farm (AR1400). The trick is to open the door, then make a precise click just above the doorframe. You'll know it when the cursor change into the "enter buliding cusor". Check my screenshots for the red dot.

So, I'm hijacking this as I think there is also a bug here. I've been weeks with support trying to understand but in both EE and classic I've had encounters where first play through works fine, but later on opening game again I suddenly cannot open any door or leave the edge of a map. No save or new game fixes this. Has anyone experienced that?!

This hasn't happened to me. What areas are you having troubling reaching? Is it all of them? And which doors of what areas?

The problem is any door/edge. I just purchased from GoG recently so only new accounts, two were using galaxy and the 32 bit version of EE.

One got into the city (stuck in the docks after delivering a body to harper's guild) I can't enter houses or leave the docks by going to edge of the map.

The other is in the manor house clearing trolls from the first floor. I was about to go upstairs but cannot and now cannot leave any other way.

Finally, after many reinstalls, I installed the classic game using the key for Baldur's gate 2 complete and I was able to make a character and entered the intro dungeon but could not get out of the first area (open door to room of people in water jars, or with golem and the thing that wants to die).

The only common factor I have is that they played fine until I saved and quit. Once I returned they all stopped working in this way.

The EE versions also had an issue with updates failing (E2 error) in galaxy that removed many of the files from the folder which required me to reinstall. All in all its pretty frustrating for something my computer should play easily and it isn't related to antivirus/windows defender as far as I can tell because I've tried with them on and off on install and play.
I have played Baldur's Gate 1 EE, Baldur's Gate 2 EE: Shadows of Amn, and Baldur's Gate 2 EE: Throne of Bhaal multiple times, and never seen the failure mode that jedi_yeti describes. When the game is in this state, does Reveal Details claim that these doors exist? When pointing at a spot that should be a cross-area door, does the cursor indicate that the area transition should occur? Can the cheat console teleport you to other areas?

File loss / corruption is a sign of a serious problem. If that is happening, you ought to find why and prevent it before spending more time pursuing this issue.
Weird bug, but other people have complaint about it on various forums. Any mods installed? Try unsintall them.

This guy fixed his problem by leveling up his characters. It worked...for a time.

Do you use a wireless keyboard? I read this thing mess-up the controls on all the IE games. Switch to wired keyboard.
