Hi, I'm at the Machine of Lum the Mad right now but none of the combinations work, especially not the one for opening the portal to the next level (triangle-red-medium),

I'm getting the awful feeling that I installed a mod that changed the combinations during my previous install. I can't be sure because I haven't played this game in years. I was hoping I'd finally be able to finish this playthrough this time around.

So does anyone know which mod I'm talking about? If not, anyone know how to fix this?

First of all the combinations only work *once*. If you have already used them (maybe 'years ago'?) they will not work again, even the portal combination, though the portal should already be open if you have used that one. If you have not used them before, and you suspect a mod -- I've never heard of a mod that alters the Machine of Lum -- then you will need to post the contents of your weidu.log here.

I've definitely never been to this part of Watcher's Keep before since it was full of monster when I first arrived. Plus the doors are all closed and the chests unlooted. I was hoping to check the mods at Spellhold Studios and Gibberlings 3 but both sites seem to be down right now.

I've also tried brute forcing the combinations, which may sound crazy but I can't pick an action more than once; i.e., I can't pick red-red-circle or long-long-medium. One of the random effect always kicks in by the second action and I haven't been able to activate any of the legit combination at all.

Anyway, for some reason pasting the contents of my weidu.log file on this reply gets me stuck with a "Processing" message that won't go away so I uploaded it here:

Are you saying that pressing 'red-red...' or 'long-long...' triggers an effect, in other words, you cannot get the third option? If that is the case it sounds like your mouse may be registering incorrectly. Either try rebooting your computer -- could be a driver issue -- or try using keyboard input (1, 2, 3... etc.)

Sorry, I was kind of unclear that I was talking about two separate issues. Selecting the same action more than once does nothing - I could pick red all day long with absolutely no effect activating. Selecting a different second action - red, long, for instance - activates an effect, but it's always a random one like potion or fireball. So the combinations haven't just been changed, since otherwise I would have stumbled on a legit one by brute force approach. It's basically impossible to activate any effect at all besides the random ones.

The problem sounds like one of the bugs caused by Baldurdash which was fixed by the Baldurdash Shadows Of Amn Fixes Conflict Resolver over here: http://www.baldurdash.org/ToB/Fixes/TOBfixes.html

But I never installed Baldurdash since the G3 Fixpack superseded it, so I don't know what's going on.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion about using the keyboard, which hadn't occurred to me, but I already uninstalled BG2 last night. I'm going to reinstall the game and all my mods all over again to see if I can catch what's going on.

Ok, well good luck with that. It would be interesting to hear if you discover what the issue was.

Well, after reinstallation now the combinations work and I've opened the portal to the next level. I installed the same mods (thank god I kept a copy of the mod files) but changed the installation order to mostly follow that from the Big World Project. Clearly one or more mods were interfering with each other but I don't which specifically. Either way, everything works now.

Great. I'm glad you got it sorted.
